Sunderland AFC U18s

I totally disagree u18s should be where they are starting to really learn how to win football matches. They are pretty much 1 step away from senior football.

These lads will have been in the Academy system since 7 or 8 years old learning how to play "properly". So u18s should really to know the jeopardy of losing and be held accountable for it.

How are they going to survive in the real world of men's football if they are protected from it all the way to u21s

Actually, it's ridiculous saying properly football. Whatever that means. All thud tippy tappy stuff is a fad and is currently being replaced by winning football
I'm not saying tippy tappy football.
I mean actually being able to pass the ball rather than just hoof it.
I'm guessing if they find they can't pass the ball from u18 they won't make the step up as we don't want to play like 90s Wimbledon

Spot on 100 per cent

A bit of a struggle in 2026 so far for the 18s
its been mainly 1st years and u16s since Christmas with most of the 2nd years playing the 21s.
The club look to have a very strong 2nd year group though.
Hopefully a lot of them will be offered professional contracts and be tied up soon

sounds promising. How do we fair against the mags various age group players, or do we generally have younger lads playing above their ages compared to them. I have raised this on here before, some Mag Knacker who works as a coach at their academy was telling me they (mags) are leaving us for dead as they are light years ahead according to him.

I have watched a fair few 18s and 21s games and it's always pretty even to be fair like.
We win some and they win some.
Their 18s upwards have almost all been brought in for some form of money by the sounds of people talking but you wouldnt think it to watch though

Not much in it then, especially given their outlay by the sounds of it. Hopefully Geragusyan or a n other graduate and join Rigg in the first team squad in the near future.

They definitely look to have a very strong 2nd year group coming in to 21s for next season but it will be much harder to break in to the 1st team than it was before.
Can see the 1st team being strengthened again in the summer which will make it even harder still.
Be great to see some 21s get chances in the cups though and even some good loans.
Be interesting to see who is offered pro contracts and who accepts them.
Geragusyan sounds like he has a lot of interest in him but hopefully he stays put!
