Sunderland AFC U18s

Cracking game this morning. Gifted them their first 2 goals, completely dominated after that and superb for first 35 minutes of second half. Couple of younger lads on later on but did fine still. Few strange calls by the ref.

Not seen much of them this year but impressed by Lewis Cowan. I never really see his name mentioned but I bet his coaches love him. Maybe doesn’t have the tricks and flicks to catch people’s eye, but has a real impact on the game from out wide, final ball was good and grafts his arse off.
Stupid playing out from the back for our goals conceded?

Both bad. First one awful - played into Burns (I think) in the DM position who miscued it straight to one of their 2 forwards sitting edge of the box. Second was sloppy play then keeper beat near post from very tight angle.
Great character to come back from conceding those 2 goals, could easily have had 6 or 7 by 75 minute mark. Left back overlapped very well too. Proctor played about an hour, never stopped running

If you hoik it up the pitch there’s a 50-50 chance it falls to the opposing team. If you play out from the back each pass is more likely 95-5 so overall jeopardy is greater if mistakes are made (as you’re nearer your goal) but so are the potential rewards.

The jeopardy is massive when you pass it to the opposition around your own box.

High risk low reward football

You're obsessed about that, thankfully we don't have our coaching set up teaching the kids hoof ball.
I am obsessed with it. I just see no point to taking a chance at the back. If the easy pass it on fair enough but some of the passes played is suicide football.

Football matches at hard enough to win without giving the opposition a few goals start.

Which is what these kids will be expected to do if they end up playing senior football at any kind of decent level. How are they meant to learn how to play that way unless they actually do it? Yes they'll make mistakes, but they'll learn from those mistakes to become better players.

Great in theory but when doesn't learning to win become part of the development. Remember these lads have been in the academy system from the age of about 8 so plenty of time to learn from mistakes.

I think once you get to u18 learn there should be a really focus on winning and learning to win. And there should be accountability
