Springwatch with Hellsbells

They said the Little Egret first bred in England in the 1980's and are now common and breeding in every part of the UK. I remember the first one I ever saw was about 1996 in Langstone Harbour. I got all excited and started looking online (dial-up in those days) so I could report it only to discover there were already hundreds living in this country.

Usually this time of year i have loads of Starlings visiting and nesting, but nothing this year. Just a few House Sparrows and a robin

I was watching Springwatch the other day and they mentioned that pet treatments are polluting our rivers and one drop could kill millions of bees

We haven't doused our fido with flea treatment for years because she had an allergic reaction to it as a puppy. That's when we discovered its strength -its active for weeks - and how it pollutes everything the dog comes in to contact with even you and your home.

Its a serious problem but most pet owners think that its safe because most vet practices recommend and sell the stuff

I didn't swap out the camera that failed last year, so no pictures from inside my birdbox again. But a few weeks ago early morning I noticed a little head poking out the box:

A couple of hours later I had a few very fluffy chicks hopping around my patio. I was in a meeting and could not get my camera out for a decent photo. By the time I could, it sounded like the parents had got them all safe in some thick willow we have.

What I did see 2 nights ago was a hedgehog running across my patio. Not had hedgehogs in a few years now. With a warm wet winter, slug and snail numbers are really high, and they have eaten half the seedlings I've been growing in the greenhouse. Great for hedgehog numbers and anything else that eats them.

I’ve got loads of them in my garden - too many really as they swarm all the feeders and table.

I heard an awful racket the other day and when I had a look there was a magpie with a starling chick in its mouth. It dropped it on the path when I approached the window and left it dazed. I took a feeder cage off one of the Feeders and put it over it so nothing could grab it and think it flew away.

Probably why they don't come anymore here with the Magpies and Wood Pigeons. Magpies are always raiding nests around here early in the morning, i think there's a few Blackbird nests in neighbours hedge

Had this little fellow sitting in the garden watching us work all day.

The poor little fox cub had an injured leg and was struggling to walk on it so I don't think It'll fare very well if the mother isn't around. We were close enough to touch it but I thought better of it, just in case it bit or tried to run away on its gammy leg.

I live in valley on bodmin moor and the owl noise is like I’ve never heard before. The numbers are high round here
I’ll try and get a sound clip tonight

We do very well for owls where I live in East Durham, lots of ideal habitat for all 5 British owls. There's a lot to be said for leaving the land and the animals that depend on it alone.

A few pictures I took of Little and Short-eared not too long back very close to where I live. Junior Little Owl is approx. 2 months old in the picture.
