Indeed. It was front page of the Chronicle with the headline 'YES'Well he was still in his prime. Southampton had finished 5tn and 2nd the previous two seasons it was considered a major coup.

McClaren would be an awful choice as Sporting Director. He was a tremendous coach in his day, watched him on many occasions and couldn’t fail to be impressed by his knowledge and detail.
Where he misses the target for me is his man-management and strategic planning. Maybe why his club management career was less than stellar. His spell at Boro will be remembered fondly for a cup win but 38.8% win percentage isn’t great. The only time he bumped over 50% was at Twente and his first spell at Derby.
A further red flag is that apart from a near 5 year stay at Boro he’s never made it past year two at any club since.
Just doesn’t instill confidence and a much needed air of expectancy for me.
Many seem to be assessing whether a Sporting Director would be any good based on their roles as Coaches/Managers. They are different jobs and should not be judged the same.
No thanks.Phil Neville ?
McLarens only being mentioned because he lives ”local” and is likely to live there until he retires. The job requires someone who won’t be off to Spurs or Villa or WHU or Southampton or Palace at the drop of a hat. IE a Sunderland fan or a local or someone prepared to commit to ten yearsish to the job and area.I'd be surprised if he came into the picture but you never know.. If there is an agency looking around Europe for the new owner it will throw up quite a few names I'd have thought with new ideas etc...
You also can’t really say having a 38.8% win rate at Boro is rubbish, given they were a mediocre top flight club for his entire tenure. Many seem to be assessing whether a Sporting Director would be any good based on their roles as Coaches/Managers. Simply keeping certain clubs in the PL is an achievement of sorts in itself. You also can’t really say having a 38.8% win rate at Boro is rubbish, given they were a mediocre top flight club for his entire tenure.
The last permanent manager we had (apart from, bizarrely Jack Ross) with a win %age higher than that without winning a league title (ie promotion) in the process was Alan Brown.
not the river plate you are thinking of, the Uruguayan one. They also say the same consortium are looking to buy River Plate. We'll be small fry by comparison?
Help please: what's the difference between a sporting director and a director of football? Ta x
L'Equipe saying it's down to 4 candidates to get the role as sporting director at the club. New people have been interviewing and the new sporting director will be English or Scandanavian. My guess is Steve Mclaren will rock up here.
I wouldn't want to exchange one set of Old Dinosaurs bone for another set... McClaren has had his dayNo thanks.
He’s a dogma driven fool. Wadnt let the lasses play it long out of defence. Other teams figured this out and pressed n pressed n pressed until we’re out of the WC. His written report to the FA a month or so later says maybe we should’ve played it long occasionally. I was at a few games and banging on about it on here hours after the games. People around us were saying it during the games.
Mebbes he’s not ower bright?

I’m not advocating him by any means but if the HangersOn are still here....I wouldn't want to exchange one set of Old Dinosaurs bone for another set... McClaren has had his day

Well, it's not Mclaren, which was my guess. Just been confirmed at Derby as DOF.
Technical Director/advisor to the board.
