Sporting Director.

If he’s so committed to a challenge, would he want to leave Austin quite yet? They don’t even enter the MLS until next year.

I dunno! Only meet the bloke a handful of times. Up to the clubs hierarchy to sell the project to him I suppose, but I’d guess that would be a difficult sell to any candidate in employment already! Let alone someone who very probably isn’t even in the picture.
More thinking in that than SD has done for SAFC during his tenure: an outside the box contender but Austin to Sunderland in November would be a big ask!!

Austin is a top city like!
That’s a cracking shout. He can bring his son if he likes....

Sunderland born and bred is young Giovanni. Might be a stretch at present!
i'd play him ahead of power and dobson for a start

I’d play you in front of them too!

L'Equipe saying it's down to 4 candidates to get the role as sporting director at the club. New people have been interviewing and the new sporting director will be English or Scandanavian. My guess is Steve Mclaren will rock up here.

Hope the Scandinavian isn’t Solbakken who was one time at Wolves. He was linked with a DOF gig recently (can’t remember who with).

Chronicle saying Jim Rodwell keeping his role and sporting director will work above him

Wash your mouth out! It's Joe Kinnear!
Zlatan. Player/Sporting Director

Seriously though it would be interesting to know the job description. Is it a support and youth development kinda role or a 100% total control he’s your players Head Coach now coach then kinda deal.

I haven’t heard anything about such a role which would surprise me if a number of the candidates were English or based in England. These things have a habit of getting about.

Sounds very positive and proactive if they are at the recruitment stage when the takeover is at least a fortnight away supposedly.
It sounds bizarre but I'd vote for that! Love Zlatan, me!

McClaren would be an awful choice as Sporting Director. He was a tremendous coach in his day, watched him on many occasions and couldn’t fail to be impressed by his knowledge and detail.

Where he misses the target for me is his man-management and strategic planning. Maybe why his club management career was less than stellar. His spell at Boro will be remembered fondly for a cup win but 38.8% win percentage isn’t great. The only time he bumped over 50% was at Twente and his first spell at Derby.

A further red flag is that apart from a near 5 year stay at Boro he’s never made it past year two at any club since.

Just doesn’t instill confidence and a much needed air of expectancy for me.
