Must 8-10k.....
I think this is overplayed.
Were not Manchester United or Liverpool, with vast amounts of overseas fans who make a once in a lifetime trip from Taiwan or the US to watch a match so they can claim to be a fan.
Our day trippers will be people like me who support the lads, follow them from a distance but simply cannot afford the time or cost of a 10hr round trip for a football match all that often. (In the championship i managed 4 home games)
Or theyll be students at Durham/Sunderland universities. Or people from afar working in the area who just like football. Whenever ive worked away ive tried to get to a local match just for something to do.
Either way the fact theyre coming should be celebrated. Theyre paying money through the turnstiles and if they enjoy themselves they might do it again.
The only time these "daytrippers" become a problem is if it means local fans cant get tickets. And thats where the discussion over stadium expansion starts.
On Saturday I was talking to a very nice lad from Singapore that had flown over to watch Arsenal (he was sitting in our end).
The PL is such a huge worldwide product, people will travel from every part of the world to see their team. If it’s easier/cheaper to get tickets in Sunderland, rather than Utd or Liverpool, they will go to Sunderland.
Must 8-10k.....
So we might get a handful when we play the big 4 or 5 teams at home. But when its Brentford or Villa I think its unlikely to make much difference!
There is no way that the East stand development won't be in the same style as the West Stand.Nah mate. The planned work to the East Stand is mainly around improving hospitality options after we missed on a few big gigs.
Although we may see an increase in capacity through the work, they are not planning on chucking on an extra tier. So rather than 46500, we might see 49000
The new work though, might be able to facilitate the move of the away fans to the NEC. That way the 900 seats in NSU balcony become available again
Probably not mate but I think you will see a lot of tourists if tickets are more available.
The mags have been complaining about it for a couple of seasons now

Deeper concourse maybe but it will be another tier

They can't add 3,000 extra seats without making the stand significantly bigger and to be honest the easiest way to do that is to add an extra tier. They could add loads of corporate and reduce the capacity though.Nah mate. The planned work to the East Stand is mainly around improving hospitality options after we missed on a few big gigs.

Corparate in second tierThat’s a lot of seats mate. I just can’t see it at this stage.
What I will say is, if they go ahead with any update of the East, adding the extra tier should be a pretty quick process in the future.
It’s mostly rumour mate but I was told about a year ago they were very keen to improve the East Stand facilities after we missed out on Taylor.
That will be how they do it, like when the blacks bar seating was the balcony padded seats in the North Stand Upper.Corparate in second tier
It wont. Just their future plans to do so.Sheepfolds development will force their hand on the south stand first
I would have thought they’d at least put another tier on the East Stand, it the side with most development room around it.Nah mate. The planned work to the East Stand is mainly around improving hospitality options after we missed on a few big gigs.

Yeah that's a good point actually if we're removing chunks of seats for posh seats you're gonna have a lot of pissed off fans being shifted for thstI can't understand how you could do that without adding an extra tier, as you'd end up with a pretty significant reduction in capacity and a lot of displaced season ticket holders (with no where for them to go) while still footing the majority of the bill for the expansion.
If Sheepfolds isn't an issue then a focus on the East stand and corporate facilities over maximizing seat numbers makes the most sense, but you're going to have to put on an additional tier to do that.
