SOL expansion

Do we know why the Aquatic Centre was built so close to the stadium when, if I'm remembering correctly, there was loads of empty space behind it?

Edit: just popped into my head, was it something to so with the mine vents? As the road couldn't be moved further back because of them?
Correct, the mine vents meant the road had to built where it is which meant we were restricted on the size of the North Stand Extension.
Or build in an integrated multi storey car park
I cant imagine any extension getting approved by the council if there isnt sufficient car parking spaces around the Stadium and in the City Centre to cater for the extra supporters especially with the Metro and Northern Rail not being fit for purpose. The previous South Stand Extension that was approved had so many planning conditions attached to it with regards transport and parking that we were gonna build it and not use it for a few years until the conditions were met, ie the Metro finally arriving on Wearside.

The opposite is true.

Councils won't approve this sort of thing if it comes with a lot of car parking, they expect there to be plans to get people to use public transport instead for "sustainability".

Your correct as far as they are concerned the stadium has excellent transport links with the new bridge you've got 3 metro stations within a 10 minute walk. That's if the metros actually turned up on time but that's another story

Matchday metros are a joke that’s something that definitely needs improving
There supposed to be every 12 minutes peak time for the hour after the match they should double that twice this season there's been gaps in service and I've waited for hour an hour. Tyne Wear mayor Kim McGuinness should be looking at the things that matter instead of getting photo ops next to new metro trains

Yep I remember waiting half an hour for one to turn up a few weeks ago. Obviously when it turned up it was full and more people squashed on at our stop so they were unable to close the doors! 3 came towards Newcastle in that time and they were away 🤷‍♂️

The last 2 home games we have walked over the new bridge and got the metro at sunderland Station. 2nd time it was absolutely choka . Got to stadium of light and the metro staff were actually pushing people on . There were far too many people on. One extra metro would take the excess away. Then again.......that's too much to ask of nexus eh ?
