SMB film thread 2024

I get it’s a cash grab aye but there’s still plenty of people just discovering the first and it’s not as if there was a massive barrier due to the language in it, a sizeable amount of dialogue was in English iirc.

I’ll still watch it like.
It's probably the unknown actors and that's it's had its 'run' as such and revenue will be next to nowt compared to when released. If anything, it reignites interest in the original when a lot more people find out about it. You can see even now that the POPULARITY rating on IMDB is climbing due to the trailer and news prior to that of it being a remake.

One I recall is Let The Right One In and another was Old Boy though thankfully I saw the original first. A Man Called Otto is the most recent mainstream 'remake' I watched though it was the Tom Hanks version I saw first but still enjoyed the original just as much.

Suze (2023) - 6/10 - Comedy/drama about a divorced mother who ends up looking after her daughter's ex-boyfriend (who she thinks is a loser) when she goes off to college. Sounds a bit shit or potential for a porn movie but it was decent light entertainment with a bit of emotion thrown in also.

The Killing Fields (1984). Amazon
8/10

I’m 42 and not sure how I’ve never seen this before. Poignant war epic set during the Cambodian conflict in 1970s, following the friendship between a local and US journalist. Loses a couple of points for the (at times) naff soundtrack.

Watched it back in the day on video cassette and thought it was a great film though recently revisited it again and found it so slow. Just couldn't get into it.
It's me , not the film!

Civil War, didn't enjoy the over-emphasis on journalists in the first half but did enjoy the latter part including the action and a bit (but not much) context on the actual civil war. Dunst and Moura were excellent 6/10

Anyone mentioned The Iron Claw? I thought the movie was very companionate to the Von Erich family. It put them in a very good light. It tells the tale of the tragedies that befell the family and also the struggles of Kevin to deal with the deaths of his brothers whilst desperate to be NWA World Champion particularly given how tough Fritz was on his sons, and the fact often he was overlooked in favour of one of the other, yet does not do so in a salacious and distasteful manner. It also shows WCCW as being the best NWA promotion which I think it was. It doesn’t show or mention much Kerry’s time in the WWF which is a positive. We don’t want it to be suddenly about WWF.

A solid 9/10.

I want to see this one but like a lot of Alex Garlands work it seems the chief critique of this is that it fails to tell the audience what side of the argument the writer stands with.

I like a lot of his work, Annihilation is underrated and even the FX show DEVS had some interesting ideas but falls short when it comes to addressing the themes in the final act. Sunshine is another example of this.

Dredd is absolutely brilliant though it must be said.

What a waste of dosh at the pictures(well for me anyway)

Kong X Godzilla 4/10
Stupid even for a monster movie. No more please

Ghostbusters 4/10
Complete shite that just doesn't work nowadays. Great films in the 80s but it is what it is. It's like bringing a new goonies out

I've also seen that but not sure why he should? As I said the civil war seemed to be too much of a back drop and not the central theme of the movie so there was even less reason for him to say.

Not going to spoiler anything but this really should not put people off going to see it.

You wouldn’t have thought they’d have been crap like

Anyone watched the Amy Winehouse film yet?

Wicked Little Letters (2023) - 6/10 - Based on a true story, starring Olivia Coleman and Jess Buckley. In 1920's Littelhampton, an upstanding member of the community starts receiving hate mail with vile language and accusations. The finger of blame points to her next door neighbour. Some laughs but relied too much on the shocking swearing for most of it.

Perfect Days (2023) - 7.5/10 - Remember someone recommending this one about a Tokyo toilet cleaner. Thought it was excellent - so refreshing and different! Very subtle in it's delivery and message.

Went to see Godzilla x Kong last night. Becoming tiresome. The fight scenes I thought were decent but any scene without Kong or Godzilla in was crap and confusing. Terribly written and terrible cast.

The Equaliser 3 - 6/10

It was ok, hopefully a good way to finish off the trilogy.
Death Proof (2007)
3/10

I watched Deathproof and Planet Terror when they were first released as a double feature. I thought Planet Terror was the better of the two. Yes very tongue (firmly) in cheek, and the 70s retro style jumpy film was actually fun! But Rose McGowan with her machine gun leg 🤣

Everyone who participated in the Oldboy remake needs to be taken for psychiatric evaluation because they must have been f***ing *insane* to attempt it

Back to Black, Winehouse story, not good except if you like her music. Apparently the father was involved and he comes across as a nice bloke........4/10
