many years ago, before you were a twinkle in your dads eye, in Scotland we used to have, what is called a qualifying dance. We invited a partner of choice from the class.I don't think it's the money that's a problem. The same parents were pushing to spend £75+ on a formal black tie event for them leaving primary school.
we learnt to dance the gay gordons, dashing white sergeant, eightsome reel and others. we never paid anything as far as I know and certainly didn't have this prom culture. we probably wore our school shorts. didn't get long trousers until secondary school.
I took a girl called Pamela, who later turned out to be a real stunner.
I got put off a bit, as my mother hounded me for I was taking. I told her she would not know her. so I told her. Turned out my mother and her mother were in the same class at school.
