SACK MOTT!

Root (32), Stokes (32), Wood (33), Rashid (35), Buttler (33), Woakes (34)
Early thirties are the peak for a cricketer. The Australia team that won in 2007 was full of over thirties.

Downgrading your fifty over game to make way for a shithouse 16 over tournament and appointing a coach who doesn't know his first xi is more the problem.

The game is very different now to what it was in 2007 which was 16 years ago. On the face of the it, the ODI side could have done with freshening up, to keep those in possession hungry and on their toes

Forgot to mention Bairstow (34), Roy (33)

Performances from older players are improving not getting worse.

We've literally got a test bowler who averages 18 since turning 35
Some great stats in there
Sadly agree. That said I think the attitude of the England players has been appalling so far. Whilst it's clearly a format which has taken a back seat, we look the least arsed from what I've seen so far, that's not a good look.
Think its about cash ? why bowl 10 overs for not a lot, when you can bowl 4 overs for 100K per game.

Careers are lasting longer due to players having central contracts and focusing on 1 or 2 formats

This is a copy and paste of what I’ve just posted in the WC thread, but the point is important and ultimately, it is the coach who is entirely to blame for what we are currently seeing:

In 2015 we were playing a brand of cricket from a different age, the rest of world cricket had moved on and we hadn’t kept up.

I fear that it’s the same with this team now, we reinvented the way ODI cricket was played, but now others have caught up and then adapted as required - we simply haven’t.

It’s embarrassing how many wickets we’ve lost early in this tournament because we’ve gone too hard too quick when as others have shown, the key is to keep wickets in hand for the last 15-20 overs and then go hard - doesn’t matter if you’re only on 150-3 off 30.

There seems to be a lack of insight on subcontinental conditions. Has Mott ever managed a team here?

Agreed. Can't help also think we don't appreciate the difference between 20 and 50 over cricket, hence the incredible selection of Livingstone whilst totally ignoring Duckett and Crawley. They might not be the answer but we've not really tried to find out.

Has to go surely. Had a shit plan of playing a load of all rounders not good enough in either discipline and chasing regardless of conditions to completely throwing it out of the window and deciding we’re going to bat first and slog it out playing a load of T20 specialists. Bloke is clueless.
