Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

Probably been covered already, but if Putin launched a nuclear attack, wouldn't there be nukes on their way to Russia before his had even landed? If so - I really don't see what he stands to gain from actually launching any sort of nuclear attack.

I do think he's lost the plot, but surely that would be stupid, unless I'm wrong about how the nuclear response would be to him launching a missile. Does he just think the west are cowards?
Yes. And then the world would end. Maybe.

Belgium, Turkey,Italy and the Netherlands have US nukes
had a quick look around, happy to be corrected:

The US has 14 nuclear armed submarines each capable of carrying 24 nuclear missiles

The UK has 4 subs capable of carrying up to 16(?) nuclear missiles each.

Pretty sure all the above missiles can carry multiple warheads each.

You can bet a fair few of them will be within range of Russia right now

Never mind cruise missiles capable of delivering multiple nuclear warheads by land sea or air.

The nuclear capability of countries like the US, Russia, France and the UK is terrifying

A hopefully hypothetical question….it turns out Putin is serious about launching a nuclear missile into the North Sea, the only way he worn do it is if Ukraine surrender….what’s everyone’s stance on that? Urge Ukraine to surrender or keep on fighting and go nuclear?

Urge them to keep fighting then move to Ukraine probably be the safest place to be by then.

I will already have nicked the Vulcan bomber from a the air craft museum By this stage so I will be safe.

Any scenario like this is basically end of the world stuff. You only need about 50+ modern sized nukes (100-1000 times bigger than Hiroshima) to go off at the same time to wipe out 80-90% of life on earth out via a nuclear winter...

Sort of like how a comet crash in Mexico killed all the dinosaurs, the dust clouds block out the sun for long enough to fuck us all. Better under the bomb, frankly.

Anyway, any scenario where he nukes a country like Britain clears that threshold, almost certainly.

Exactly mate, but if he launches a nuclear strike he may as well strap himself to the rocket, because there'll be another one heading his way.

You don't rise ruthlessly to the top of a country like Russia without a very strong survival instinct.

No. As I understand it (based on something posted earlier in this thread) the damage and subsequent fallout wouldn’t even reach the midlands.
It's not a credible scenario though. If he launches just one, what's he going to do about the forty we launch back? Just sit there and take it? If he launches at the West, it'd be shitloads and a knowing suicide decision to blow up the world.

In reality, his army would disobey him.

I’ve also no doubt they are all in positions right now to fire with no time at all.

Nukes being pointed at eachother has happened for years and will be a daily thing here.

Mental submarines like, my mate works on them and it blows my mind how he’s underwater for 90% of the time he goes away. Proper mad, clever inventions.

I think only Callaghan has said what his letter said, which was that he would have fired in retaliation (this bit might be wrong, but it is what I remember!).
I’ve read various works by peter hennessy on the subject, no PM has said what they wrote for each sub. The best guess from Hennessy was to sail for the American eastern seaboard…
