Cheers mate, I guess rugby has never hit the big time in Sunderland then.

They're currently in the 8th tier (Durham/Northumberland 2) - there's only 9 tiers in total in this part of the UK. A long way to make their mark on the national game!

Darlington Mowden Park (the team that bought Darlington FC's old ground) are currently 3rd tier. Second-best performing team from the region after the Falcons.
 


There's loads of clubs in the NE. West Hartlepool used to be in the premiership. Unfortunately Rugby is very much who has the most money, and plenty times you see a club fly up the system and come back down when the funding runs out. Alas, Sunderland has never been one that has been blessed with such funding, but I can assure you the falcons does a lot across the North East for junior rugby.
Hartlepool has six rugby teams, West used to be the best sold there old ground years ago now have a much smaller ground. Northern who also play at Gosforth were more the Newcastle team before the falcon played in black and white before them.
