At the time he was said to be wanted by Man United, which was a better prospect as Champions, but he would only sign for Newcastle once they agreed a record figure, as you say the hometown club stuff was nothing but spin once they had him.
On the Fever pitch documentary about the rise of the Premier league, Alex Ferguson is talking about Shearer when he tried to sign him before he went to Blackburn, and he basically said he followed the money, why else would you choose Blackburn over Man Utd.

It’s a real scatter-gun approach to transfers they have isn’t it? I’m no football genius like whatserface at Newcastle but are you not taking a bit of a chance in bidding for some defender no-one had really heard of until last week. If he does sign, like most foreign players he’s going to need at least a 6 month settling in period. By then it could (hopefully) be too late.

Ah, I was wondering how long it would take for the narrative starting to be shaped towards "relegation is for the best, a fresh start and we can build again".

If they lose to Leeds it'll be ramped up another gear.
No way that Trippier doesn’t have a relegation clause in a World Cup year like

Their scattergun approach is absolutely f***ing mental, its a anyone will do policy at the moment
Mags at work took the piss last week when I suggested Suarez and Costa would be available and they should be in for them.

Also took the piss when I said they should be in for Connor Coady, Eriksenn and Milner.

Also took the piss when I said an attacking full back will not stem the goals they’re conceding.

Today they decided I’d be best placed to be their DOF. Mental fucks the lot of them.
