I started in the original bodyshop in the 80's on Bluebird(that's me with my ZX Turbo one in the pic in 1989) and we had new starters come in and leave pretty much every week, staff turnover was even higher in them days...
We used to show them the crack and quite often they would last an hour or two especially on the original long nights we did and say oh this is not for me and walk out..
One lad said is this all you do I said yes but about twice as quick as you are, crack on and he said f*** that I'm off back to Halfords... 🤣
TBF it was hard graft but I was only 20 so could crack it, I was determined to not let it beat me and after 3 years of that EVERY job I had after that in the next 33 years seemed a piece of p***... Most people had a different mindset back in them days though...
Problem is some people just don't want to graft, they expect their money for nowt even back then, and now is similar, especially the young uns that came in the last 7 years or so, most were more bothered about looking at their phones than doing their graft, some days my phone was red hot none stop and I'm sure I delivered more parts than the lads did just to keep the line going, made the day go quick though..
Yes some jobs were harder than others especially on or tied to the line full respect to those that have to do that but in the main it is what you made of it and it was all in your head I found - if you kept your nose clean, did your graft and got your head round it, it was bearable, certainly not a holiday camp (though worked with a few who tried to make it one for themselves!!!) and I lasted 35 years without a single day off on the sick through some hard graft and shifts so it could be done if you put your mind to it...🤔
I would freely admit it is not for everyone though so if you hate it, move on, life is to short to be stuck in a job you hate...👍
Proper work ethic, fairplay 👏

I remember about 30 years ago one lad we knocked about with started aged about 18.

He came home and said it was hard graft and he gets 'Neighbours sweat'

We were like, wtf is neighbours sweat, and he says it's like the fake sweat you see on Neighbours when they're running, big patches on their backs dripping, but for real 😄

Something I'll always remember and anytime I see something like that I instantly think 'Neighbours Sweat'
