Nissan

To cut costs. Is that too simplistic?

Why wouldn't they keep it open? (Just playing devils advocate here)

Nee one knows either way. We do know established manufacturers have had their pants pulled down by the Chinese.
Even at the current low volumes, NMUK is making a small profit. With the EU tariffs on batteries and parts not made locally , it’s really obvious they’ll want to utilise the spare capacity here to build their cars and consequently large volumes mean big profits(as happened when we were building 500,000 cars a year) . If the merger doesn’t go through, then will be the time to potentially worry.

I heard a rumour several weeks ago about Honda coming to Europe didn't think they'd merge with Nissan to build Hondas here. Great news for the future of the plant in Sunderland
Honda used to be in Swindon and got shot of it, can't remember exactly when, but not long after 2016 rings a bell.

Looks like discussions between Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi, a merger would make them the third biggest car manufacturer. They need to make cars so can't see why they'd close Sunderland, although they'll look at every area of the business to maximise profits.

Honda's president, Toshihiro Mibe, said Honda and Nissan will attempt to unify their operations under a joint holding company. Honda will lead the new management, retaining the principles and brands of each company. They aim to have a formal merger agreement by June and to complete the deal and list the holding company on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by August 2026, he said.

No doubt about who will be pulling the strings

Made decent engines.
Visited both Nissan and Honda sites in my day as worked for a key first tier supplier for both. We won Nissan’s Supplier of the year as well and Honda’s best delivery supplier.
Good times.

Good news for the NE.

Merry Xmas to all my fellow Nissan colleagues and suppliers afar. Can’t believe you are all still bickering on here during shutdown. Too many opinions, it’s all up and down and hot and cold. Cant trust what any of them say (hierarchy) let’s be real. If you’ve been there long enough you should know that. Nobody can forecast the top and bottom of it which is who is going to walk into a dealership and buy a car. Let’s see what the new year brings. Have a great one with your families everyone ❤️

Same to u mate and family! In recent times this thread with carling and his youtube.com predictions has been comedy gold . Hopefully he spends some of his 60k on his family and invests in some golf ⛳️ clubs or fishing 🎣 rods and spends less time monitoring youtube.com for allegedly tales of woe for nissan. But then again he won't so will still be on here ha . Imo NMUK going nowhere its a lean mean money 💰 machine . At worst would be cherry picked by other car manufacturers. All the best mate 👍

No mate a lean money machine is the Amazons of this world. Nissan is a mass employer in the north east. Many of which couldn’t survive a month in the real world imo. The margin on the average vehicles pumped out by Nissan will be fairly minimal and will be continually squeezed so god help the 6000 or so workers if it gets squeezed any further which under this utter clown starmer it likely will, carling is a realist and i for one wouldn’t encourage anyone to go into a failing industry. Not a hope but a real observation of real life issues that the industry is facing.

Motor manufacturing isn't a failing industry, it's a changing one. If it's not making cars for the general public it'll be making whatever the transportation of the future is and change as society does.

Making more and more cars is unsustainable, even just viewed in terms of traffic management.

The only way I can see these companies progressing is making fewer cars with bigger margins.

Less personal vehicle ownership means bigger public transport fleets, more taxis (driverless in the not so distant future). These will have to be made by someone.
