Would be good, only because it would piss the mags off.

However, I genuinely want him to stay. They won’t progress with him yet he’s absolutely untouchable and it’s comical.

Whilst they’d struggle to bring in another “world class manager”, they might bring in a competent manager that can get the best out of an average squad for an entire season.

Careful what we wish for.
I m the same. The bloke is made from Teflon. Was exactly the same at Liverpool. Wasted millions on shite but the fans hated the owners at the time so it all got ignored.

Where are all the resident mags? They always have an opinion on all things Newcastle. It would be interesting to hear their take on this rumour
Balls in Ashley's court. If he has any ambition beyond survival for the club he should give Benitez more control over transfers and should give him the kind of support he's promised in the past. If he doesn't then Benitez will go, the new man might be good enough to keep us up, but regardless of whether we survive 19/20 Ashley's approach is one of diminishing returns.

Hard to convince players to join a mid-table Premier League club who've thumbed their nose at progress and have no interest in striving for more than survival, same for managers, sponsors, and so on.

1st paragraph. Correct.

2nd paragraph. No different from any other Premier League club outside the top(/big) 7. Why are NUFC any different?

You do realise that you’ve just described half of the Premiership clubs.
I think most, if not all Premier League clubs, will strive for more. Some are hamstrung by a lack of finances (we're not), but when teams like Burnley and Bournemouth are aiming to grow their clubs and we're not, it's damning of the owner's stewardship.

Which Premier League clubs have thumbed their nose at progress like?

I'd argue that NUFC haven't this season. Broke their transfer record which helped them do brilliantly in the second half of the season. Also managing (so far) to keep hold of one of the best managers in the league who most teams in the Premier League would happily have as their manager.

Being a mag you'd know more than me though and I can't be arsed to look into other signings this season. Surely you've spent £50m+?

Clearly doing a decent enough job like

This. Not sure why there's people refusing to believe the obvious. They've been really good the 2nd half of the season. I hope he fucks off.

Same, where are people expecting them to finish with someone else in charge?

I am not saying for one minute he isn't overrated and the lack of responsibility he gets when he loses is hillarious

But I'd much prefer he left

Sold c£40m, bought c£53m. Not really speculating to accumulate in a similar style to Wolves or West Ham, say. Yes we signed Almiron in January, and that's great, but we've not spent anything like our finances could afford (without putting the future at risk).

I can't see any team in the Premier League who've had a good opportunity to push forward and chosen not to. There are teams who financially cannot spend the type of money that would change the status quo for their club. Burnley, for example, they finished brilliantly 17/18 and had they had the financial muscle to spend a good amount of money strengthening their squad without risking their future, I'm sure they would have. Cardiff would no doubt loved to have been able to match Fulham's largesse, but couldn't.

Won't speak for all Newcastle fans, but I certainly look at each result with the lack of quality in the squad firmly in my mind. To be honest, there's not many games where the way he's set us up has cost us points. Usually it's a lack of quality, or a lack of focus. He takes a fair amount responsibility for each of those, but his chief responsibility is tactics and strategy.

Did Pardew and McLaren have a lack of quality?
Just face it man anyone else would be hounded out for being Ashleys yes man while producing the most turgid football ever.
