New Music Releases Thread

There are new releases tomorrow from H.E.R., Kings of Convenience, Max Bloom, MNDR, Mykki Blanco, Angelique Kidjo, Andrew Hung, Ethan Gold, Blank Glodd, Mind Maintenance, Francis Lung, Band of Holy Joy and The Catenary Wires.
Amelia from the Catenary Wires has a CBE, holds a chair in economics and is an indie pop legend.

She did. Tallulah Gosh have to be one of the most successful bands ever but not for music. One of the others won the Turner Prize a few years back.

In some ways, they may have been more talented in fields outside music but who's to say that, without being members of Tallulah Gosh, they would have been as successful. Let's face it. World President Gedge wouldn't have reached his position without being part of The Wedding Present.

Just been to see deathcrash in a church down the street from me. One of the best, if not the best gig I've ever been to in my life, absolutely stunning. Blew me away that. What a tremendous talent they are.

Best sound I've heard at a gig as well, can't get over how perfect it was. Vocals crystal clear, guitars, drums all coming through immaculately.

Live music being back is special, go out and enjoy it if you can. The best, and better than you remember.

Really like the deathcrash EP
@James I think I’m the ultimate hipster having mentioned them first

It is mate, but I'm standing by it. Shivers from start to finish, it was incredible. Can't get over how good that sound quality was, you expect so much reverb in a church but it was managed perfectly. The drums, oh man...

I'm buzzing with that. Outstanding. Can't recommend that any higher. Even our lass thought it was special and she hates me and everything I listen to.

That is some talk up!!! Will definitely check this out.

Otherwise this week it's Mykki Blanco for me. Loved what I've heard so far. Transgressive Records are on some run too. Just signed Damon bloody Albarn yesterday!

Good question. Kings of Convenience are sort of indie folk-pop from Norway, critically acclaimed, I can find them a bit bland. Mykki Blanco is a transgender rapper. Angelique Kidjo is a Beninese singer, who's been recording for decades. I think this album showcases new African artists. Andrew Hung is the half of Fuck Buttons that isn't Blanck Mass. Ethan Gold is a singer songwriter who has done a lot of soundtrack work. Blank Glodd is actually Blank Gloss (double typo in there), part of the ambient Americana thing that Uncut loves. Mind Maintenanace, I think, are a two piece sort fo jazz-rock-Afrobeat thing. Francis Lung used to be in Wu Lyf (wasn't the singer), is now solo. Band of Holy Joy are veteran sort of indie-folk-punk (but not punk) types lead by Johny Brown, from Whitley Bay, they're a big favourite of mine. The Catenary Wires are indie pop veterans, previously in Tallulah Gosh, Heavenly, Marine Research and Tender Trap. Their new album has got good reviews.
 Had no idea BoHJ were still going - picked up a used copy of Manic, Magic, Majestic on vinyl last month - hadn't heard it or their name in about 30 years!

This week's ILSYDHT:

Arooj Aftab: a lovely, lovely album. She has a jazz background which she's merged with Pakistani folk songs. It's very, very beautiful.
Will Beeley: one of those lost album type things. This is a sort of country/folk thing. Very good it is too.
TEKE:TEKE: Japanese garage rock type thing. Sounds like it should be soundtracking a Tarantino film. Really enjoyable!
Turner Cody & The Soldiers Of Love: TC was part of the NYC anti-folk scene back in the day. He's moved on to something a little more countryish here. Nice, quite gentle songs. Pretty good.
Blank Gloss: ambient soundscapes, pedal steel and synths. Maybe not for everyone but very good if you like your ambience a little twangy.
White Flowers: female fronted shoegaze/dreamprop. It's a nice listen but not exceptional.
Mind Maintenance: normally a bassist and drummer but they've taken up African instruments here, specifically the guimbri and mbira. It's quite hypnotic but gets a little samey over the full course of an album.
The Band of Holy Joy: as good as always. Literate songs that defy genre fronted by a north eastern voice. Really good!
The Catenary Wires: proper indiepop, girl boy vocal combo, interesting lyrics, quite singalong. Really, really enjoyable!
Francis Lung: an excellent album of 70s-ish pop, often piano led. Good, good songs.
Kings of Convenience: very pretty, gentle folk from Norway. At times, when they drift into a sort of bossanova sound, they remind me a bit of Flight Of The Conchords (without the comedy).
Andrew Hung: it's clear that he brings the post-punk to Fuck Buttons while Benjamin John Power brings the electronica. I like this. Reminds me of someone but Ican't think who.
Jack Ingram, Miranda Lambert, Jon Randall: three country names recording in a barn type studio. You can hear the cows on some tracks. Sounds like they're having fun and it's fun for the listener also.
Elephant9: lilting, psychedelic jazz. Another very good album.
Marinero: a melding of Latin American sounds and more straight-forward songwriting classicism (he's from a Mexican family but was born and raised in California). This is good. Very promising!
Red Ribbon: American alt-pop, reminiscent of, say, The Breeders. This is bouncy and poppy and pretty good.
Soul Jazz Records presents Fire Over Babylon: Dread, Peace and Conscious Sounds at Studio One: a compilation showcasing some of the music that directly celebrated Rastafarianism and was recorded at the legendary Studio One. It's great, unless you're Morrissey.
Ian McNabb: came out last week but I've just got round to it this week. It's long (90 minutes, 20 songs) and very good in places. He can still rock and "Jivin' Miss Daisy" is one of the best bad song titles of 2021.
Joni Habel: debut from a Norwegian singer-songwriter, mostly acoustic, very pretty. Second Norwegian album of the week,
Mark Fry: a weird, early 70s psych-folk album that's just had a re-release. It's vaguely conceptual, with the title track, Dreaming WIth Alice, played in excerpts across the album. It's enjoyably whimsical.

Album of the week: it didn't actually come out this week but the Arooj Aftab album is one of the best of the year so far so gets the nod. It's a strong week though - Band of Holy Joy, Andrew Hung, TEKE:TEKE, Catenary Wires and Francis Lung are all really good. In fairness, only Mind Maintenance and White Flowers don't really hit the spot to some degree.

Something of a bumper week for new albums. There are releases tomorrow from Dojo Cat, Gaspard Auge (half of Justice solo), Hiatus Kaiyote, Hiss Golden Messenger, ISLAND, John Grant, Johnny Dynamite & the Bloodsuckers, Lightman Jarvis Ecstatic Band, Lightning Bug, Lucy Dacus, Matthew Dear, Modest Mouse, SPELLLING, Squirrel Flower, T. Hardy Morris, The Mountain Goats, Tyler the Creator, Katherine Priddy, Cedric Burnside, Stars and Rabbit, Dal:um, The Grid & Robert Fripp, Rose City Band, Lonelady, Birds of Maya, Vincent Neil Emerson, Faye Webster and Carlos Nino & Friends.
