New Music Releases Thread

Bonny Doon is another lovely listen. I'm just a sucker for any laid back slacker type band.

Got the new Preoccupations on now. First song sounds like Duran Duran or something.

I think the opener is one of the stronger tracks ! I’m a bit dissapointed by it all overall, considering how good viet Cong and last one was. Be interesting to hear your thoughts.

One listen. It is crap. They've managed to remove everything that made the interesting in the first place. I didn't really enjoy the last album either.

I will persist, but nothing is grabbing me on first spin.

That Soccer Mommy record is good. But christ, what a dreadful name.

I'm off to see Hookworms tonight, first time at the Electric Brixton as well. Looking forward to it!

So, something of a bumper weekend for listening to new stuff for me. Quick summary, in no particular order:

Baloji: cracking album! He's a Belgian rapper of Congolese origin so what you get here is a Francophone merging of afrobeat, afropop and hip hop. Well worth checking out!
Cavern of Anti-Matter: It's good but vastly different to previous CoA-M material.
Ernie Hawks and the Soul Investigators: flute fronted, largely instrumental retrofunk from Finland. Enjoyable!
Preoccupations: As mentioned already in the thread, it's just a bit dull.
Alasdair Roberts, Amble Skuse and David McGuinness: Really good! Alasdair Roberts is a big favourite of mine anyway. This takes his traditional Scottish murder ballads and sets them over piano, a bit of orchestration and some electronics.
Melissa Laveaux: She's a Canadian singer-songwriter, of Haitian origin, who would normally do sort of folk/blues stuff but has gone back to her Haitian origins for this. Exceptionally good! Elements of calypso, soca and traditional Haitian guitar stuff.
Jack White: Seems a tad all over the place. Tracks are enjoyable but I'm not so sure how cohesive an album it is.
The Rheingan Sisters: It's a good week for traditional music. I was very impressed by them at Cambridge Folk Fest last year. Two sisters playing violin and sometimes singing. They've spent time training with both French and Scandi traditional musicians, seemingly.
Sunflower Bean: Enjoyable indie rock. They've lost a little of their early shoegaziness, maybe.
Bonny Doon: As @James said, a lovely listen. Pavement gone a bit country/folk would be my reference point. Not doing anything massively original but warm and comforting.
BCUC: bouncy, shouty, dancy, South African fusion of lots of things. Only three tracks - the first is 19 mins+, the next 16 mins+ and the third 3 and a half mins. The final one (Nobody Knows) could be a hit, if hits still happened nowadays.
Gris-de-lin: very impressive. Female singer-songwriter from Dorset. Meshes together post-rock, blues, anti-folk etc.
Mark Pritchard: gentle, ambient electronica. He was formerly one half of Global Communication (along with Tom Middleton). Goes further down the line he followed with 2016's Under the Sun.

The final new releases of March this week. A mixed bag from what I can see:

Ashley McBryde, Ben Harper & Charlie Musselwhite Bettye LaVette, Caitlin Canty, DeadMau5, En Vogue, Escape the Fate, Frankie Cosmos, Holy Waves, Kacey Musgraves, Kate Nash, Lindi Ortega, Mary Chapin Carpenter, MF Doom & Czarface, Sam Morrow, The Garden, The Vaccines, The Voidz, Cabbage, Trembling Bells, Moon Gangs, FACS, Dead Meadow, Chris Carter, Haley Heynderickx and Amen Dunes.

Anyone go and see Sunflower Bean last night? Third time for me, not as good as the first, but loved hearing their new stuff properly.

Went to see young fathers last night, superb band live, haven’t seen a venue heaving like that in a long time.

Bit of a bumper week for gigs after not being at any so far this year. Had belle and Sebastian on Tuesday who were excellent as ever. Big thief on Saturday night

Wish I had. Saw them the last time they were in Newcastle and really enjoyed them. Part of the reason I never went last night was because I hate gigs so close to albums being released. Having said that, I've had the new album on pretty much constantly since Friday and think it's excellent.

I went and thought they were a good tight band. she can sing, he can play and she is easy on the eye. Only heard them in the car on radio 6 in the morning. Listened to the albums during the day and saw them live. i definitely will go again.

I do find my attention drifting a little bit around tracks 7-9 or so (I'm guessing the exact tracks there mind). That's not to say I don't like those tracks, just it starts off so well it doesn't quite carry all the way through. Overall though I think it's really good.

Edit: just realised you said you went. Did you feel really old. I'm 35 and I think it's about 18 months since I saw them. I've never felt so old. Average age must have been about 18 I reckon. Still, they were all really into them and I do enjoy seeing crowds so into a band.

HAHA. wait until you are 56:lol::lol: I am passed the age that I care what people think. Luckily I still have my hair, I'm ripped and cool as fuck.

The crowd weren't that animated but it was a good atmosphere. I am happy anywhere when I have a beer in my hand.

DOOM's one of the best ten rappers of all time IMO and Inspectah Deck's one of my favourites from Wu Tang so big hopes for that collab album.

I know absolutely nothing by any other artist on that list apart from The Vaccines and Kate Nash, I'll give them a swerve.

The Voidz are Julian Casablancas' other band. And, you must have heard of DeadMau5? Wears a metallic mouse head and plays house/trance type stuff. Had a couple of hits, I think. En Vogue are 90s R&B divas who were well known 20+ years ago, probably before your time. Neither of the last two interest me but they're names I know.

Of the rest, I'm tending towards the stuff from Cabbage onward in the list. I keep an Amazon list of stuff I'm interested in as a reminder and they're all from that (everything else is culled from Metacritic). Frankie Cosmos is from both - low fi American indie girl pop.

New Voidz album out tomorrow, can't f***ing wait. Three of the five tracks they've released on Spotify so far are fantastic. Absolutely loved their debut album.

Can’t wait for the new dma’s album out next month love the 3 tunes av heard so far.
Got their gig, noel, miles kane and twisted wheel coming up in the next few month.
