New Music Releases Thread

Saw them open for Field Music at the cluny. Good energy about them. Will have a listen to the single. Good luck to them.
Nice one mate, cheers! Field music have been brilliant for help and advice and use of their studio every week. They’ve been offered some cracking gigs lately but had to knock them back as they all seemed to clash with their mocks. They all just buzz for their music, great to see!

My weeklty review, as usual:

The Children's Hour: a lost album from 2003, featuring Andy Bar, Josephine Foster and David Pajo. This is early 2000s indie pop jangle at its best. Very good.
Whitelands: energetic shoegaze. I think they may have been supporting Slowdive. File under promising.
Teethe: US indie psych folk. This is pretty good, without being special.
Alev & Jas: The Jas is Jas Shaw of Simian Mobile Disco, the Alev is German/Turkish singer/comoser Alev Lenz. The EP (5 tracks, 20 minutes) is spectacularly good. Floating vocals, sort of ambient but with a pop twist.
Liam Bailey: a new name to me. A mix of reggae, soul, R&B and rock. This is a really, really enjoyable album. Recommended.
Martin Carthy: not strictly speaking new (recorded in 1965 so a re-release). This is a superb album of folk standards and new (in 65) songs.
Rafael Toral: one 47 minute track. Twisting ambient jazz. Pretty good.
Mary Timony: a really good album of alt rock from the Wild Flag/Ex Hex singer. Invites comparisons with the latest Sleater Kinney album. She has a terrific voice.
Maya Shenfeld: experimental/ambient electronica. Relatively short tracks. Pretty good.
Laetitia Sadier: a relatively solid album from the Stereolab singer. If you like them, you'll like this but will still be hoping for new Stereolab material.
Real Estate: Business as usual, strong songs. Probably their best album since Atlas.
MGMT: a real return to form. This reminds me of peak Mercury Rev. Excellent!
Corb Lund: as usual, a strong alt country album from the Canadian
Hurray For The Riff Raff: superb, definitely their best since The Navigator. A bit more reminiscent of Look Out Mama than their more recent albums. Up there.
Nadine Shah: she gets better. A really good set of songs, diversifying things musically. A great listen.

Album of the week: Hurray for the Riff Raff but 5 or 6 others are contenders. If Alev & Jas had made a full album, it'd be up there.

The Prize Horse record is worth a go. Enjoyed on first listen.
Yeah just had a quick listen to the first track and I’m going to certainly invest some time into this. Reminds me of Dark Star

Tried Real Estate last night (excellent) and tried Last Dinner Party (poor, I don’t want to be joining in the pile on and I saw what they were trying but nothing hung together for me. Felt disjointed and try hard.)

MGMT is good, but I thought the last record was a bit underrated too.

Pregoblin have their debut out as well. No idea what they're like now that Jessica left the band. It's Alex Sebly's project, who was part of Fat White Family in the very early days. Might be worth a go.

Agreed on Real Estate, really enjoying it.

I haven’t listened to MGMT since their debut, is it worth catching up with them?

Looking forward to Fall Tribute Act and I might give the Gallagher Squire album a go just out of morbid curiosity.

Ben Frost, Nils Frahm, Sheer Mag and Yard Act for me Clive

I listened to it last night. Its not as poppy as that debut, but still well worth a listen. Arkle is spot on (as usual), a bit mercury rev-ish
Interesting they've said there's an Oasis influence on this record.
Bit nervous about the Yard Act album. The singles have been a bit meh
Quickly got bored of the debut despite initially loving it. And agree about the singles off this record. Really liked them both times I've seen them live mind.
I thought all other releases would be cancelled tomorrow. Who wants to go up against Squire & Gallagher!!
The rest will be bumbaclarts by comparison. As you were x
