New Music Releases Thread

Excellent! She’s so engaging live. Didn’t realize it was completely solo - I guess Mike is at home with the bairn. Last couple of times we’ve seen her she’s played Torch Song and Jellyfish but it’s been full band, so I can understand the disappointment. That Katie Malco album was excellent, you had a great two-fer with that ticket.

LS is one of the best live voices I’ve heard, perfect. I owe Frank T - saw her solo supporting him at a hardcore club in NYC and she’s probably my favorite artist now. Glad you enjoyed. 👍
Yeah both of them are completely solo, travelling the country with all their gear, merch and clothes in the back of Katie’s Ford Ka.

Katie Malco is playing a full band tour in November and plays Edinburgh on my wedding anniversary. It’s a Friday though so will need to look into the logistics with kids’ swimming lessons etc.

Another very good week with releases that are piping hot and full of flavour. My mini review:

Buzzcocks: their first post-Shelley album. It's a good post-punk type thing.
Air Waves: a bit of an indie pop minor interchanging supergroup. This is a very pretty album!
Vieux Farka Touré & Khruangbin: really good, as expected. Vieux's dad's songs given the laidback Khruangbin treatment.
Beth Orton: doesn't deviate too much from the post-dancefloor folk that Beth Orton specialises in but still very good.
Tim Burgess: a sprawling double album that shouldn't work but does. There's a really happy vibe here and it's a lot of fun.
Marisa Anderson: ambient Americana. She plays guitar, lap steel and pedal steel. Really engaging.
Sports Team: more of the same. Arch-indie rock with Pulpisms going on.
Editors: it's alright. I can kind of hear what Blanck Mass brings to the party but they do sound like geography teachers trying to be cool.
Peter Matthew Bauer: Walkmen bloke occupies the middle ground between the Walkmen and Kevin Morby. This is good.
The Tallest Man On Earth: the erstwhile Swedish folkie returns with a mix of covers and originals. Nice.
Jake Blount: this is exceptional. Folk melded with elements of hiphop.
Makaya Mccraven: another gem. Jazz, which is what he does, elevated to something cosmic.
Alex G: floaty, spacey, ambient indie. Very impressive!
Dr John: the final album he recorded. Some covers, some reworkings, some new songs. It's an interesting final instalment.
White Hills: epic stoner rock. Good stuff.
The Enablers: mentioned above. It's exceptionally good. Basically post-rock with spoken word over the top. Get it listened to!
The Comet Is Coming: excellent as expected. Energetic space jazz. Another fine addition to the Shabaka Hutchings pantheon.
Bitchin Bajas: cosmic jams, 4 tracks each between 9 and 15 minutes long. Good stuff.
Andrew Combs: he's gone a little soulful. My closest comparison is Josh Rouse.
Lande Hekt: an engaging indiepop singersongwriter album. Tis nice.
Courting: interesting debut. They've got quite a varied sound rooted in British indie-rock.
Iceage: pretty impressive and very coherent for an odds and ends collection.
Nikki Lane: this week's token Americana album. It's very good, actually.

Album of the week:
The Enablers. There's a lot else that's good but this impresses me most.

Dropkick Murphys as well - they’ve put music to some “lost” Woody Guthrie lyrics and released it as an album.

New vacant Lots record out today.
The usual Joy Division / Mary chain / suicide
Sound but the bits I’ve listened to sound great, particularly the track Eyes closed.
