My lad got mugged last night...

Bit of an update. The boy's been on to his bank and they've started an investigation to see if they'll reimburse him. The muggers drew £200 out of his account before he could stop the card. They subsequently made a couple of attempts at £200, one for £300 and one for £500 at different ATMs - all of them blocked.

Not much of a consolation but at least the buggers had to work hard for their £40 each.

He seems fine about it. A bit of a rite of passage I think. Meanwhile, I'm off out for the evening with just my travel card, £45 in cash and, for emergencies, an old bank card for an account with only £100 in it.

Considering the police will know their exact movements you would think it's worth tracking them down.

Hardly likely it's the first or last time they've done this.

About 11.30 in that London. Walking back from the tube he was followed and surrounded by 5 kids. One of them flashed a knife and demanded his wallet (as usual it was fairly empty) and then threatened him if he didn't give them the pin number for his bank card, saying they'd hold him until one of them had used it, and woe betide him if he gave a false PIN. As they were holding him loads of cars passed and a few pedestrians looked away (this happened by a major road) until a couple stopped and my lad asked them to call the police. This spooked the gang and they cleared off. All this happened 5 minutes walk from our house where we've lived 20-odd years.

They managed to withdraw the £200 limit from his account (don't know his chances of the bank writing that off - he cancelled the card as soon as he got home) and he's lost his driving license, work ID card, etc. They didn't want his phone cos "it wasn't good enough". :D

The police have gone to the trouble of taking a statement over the phone and said there's not much more they'll do. When pressed, they said they'll think about looking at CCTV but no promises.

My general feeling is, thank god he's safe but what a shitty society we live in.
I will ge pelters for this but gonna ask anyway , were they black ?

You’re saying muggings don’t happen in London. Facts prove you’re wrong. Not sure what you’re trying to achieve.
I'm not saying that at all. Some on here seem to think the place is a lawless shit hole. From 14 years experience I'm saying it isn't.

Ooh look at me, I live in London

Hardly anything to brag about.

Genuine born and bred Cockneys have been moving out in droves in recent years,
whilst the newcomers turn it into a cesspit.

You seem confused. Or are you saying you'd be perfectly happy for your missus to take a stroll with the nipper round @Silksworth Lad's gaff next Friday night?
I'm not confused at all. In your haste to have a pop you've confused London with a particular area of London. And archway, yes, we went for supper at a friend's place there. Got the tube there and a cab back as it was late.

I grew up in Clapham and Wandsworth. Reet shitholes. I was mugged down there on more than a few occasions in my youth, always at knifepoint, always no real way of fighting back without getting repeatedly stabbed in the face. It's always horrible when it happens, and it sounds like your lad used his brain, acted calmly, and got himself safely out of a shite situation that could've been a lot worse if he'd acted like a dick. Clever lad. I put that down as a win for the Silksworth family tbh. You taught him well. ;) Don't let a few little wankers put you on edge, but definitely be more wary.

I'm pretty sure you can go to the bank with a crime refeference number from the police station and get that payment refunded. I'm surprised the police didn't mention that.
