Luke O'Nien

We don't know what his motives are. Maybe moving away from his young family is too important to him

Maybe spending all week on the training ground with Xhaka and Le Bris is more appealing to him long term than going out on loan

Maybe he has other responsibilities away from playing

Maybe he is just happy

Exactly, he may have one eye on his future on coaching and figures he will learn more in this capacity than playing in championship

None of those clubs will offer him PL money. Hes not getting any younger so I think he will stick around.
I assume he’s thinking about what the next few years holds.

His options are probably a championship side for a year or two. Then uncertainty.

Or hang around here, learn leadership and management from a premier league side, top manager and Bundesleague league winning captain, and then springboard your career into coaching, alongside the mindset coaching business you have already built up, and run from the Beacon (I assume).

Yeah he won’t be here past this season

They have made an effort to keep links between old and new and it’s worked

But LON will want to play footy he’s still really young

He’s 31 mate

He’s probably got at least 5 or 6 playing years left

I dunno why people are going on likes he’s gonna retire and coach

Was one of best defenders in the championship last year man

Absolutely just think we will hold onto him till end of season.

I dont think hes going to retire. We gave him a new contract though so we must have some plan for him. He may want to just go out on loan.

And we need english players.

If I was him I'd want to play in the last few years of his career, you're a long time retired. He can always come back like Bally did.

Does anyone have an old onien shirt they have grown out of? Can be any size but reasonably priced?
I don’t want to say what for at the moment but I’m looking for one and there are none available unless new. It would be greatly appreciated. Message me if you can help. 👍

I’d have him at this club at whatever role he’s most suited to forever. He’s not one of these ex pros who play 40 games and fuck off and then try and associate when you do alright because they played a few times (you, Joey)

The lad is Mr Sunderland, he’s stayed here through thick and thin. Mostly thin. He’s played games in the Prem, for us, despite being hooked at half time on his debut. Despite a load of people doubting his ability, his versatility, his heading ability.

If he wants to go play games then so be it, we owe him that. Personally I think he’ll be useful, even now

He’s done what everyone on this forum has ever wanted, gave his all for this football club, on and off the pitch.

This. SKP left Sunderland and played elsewhere but we welcome him back with open arms - and quite right too.
A Legend's Legend.
Luke O'Nien will be an ambassador for this club long after he's hung up his boots. I'm certain of it.

Been an immense servant, if he wants to go and play football who can blame him, if he wants to stay and warm the bench then that’s fine. I wish him all the best regardless. Great fella.
If he wants to go we can't stand in his way, but I wouldn't ask him to go, in fact I would ask him to stay but he might want to just play football every week cause he's a top bloke.

but if the club are trying to force it through, it's the wrong decision. Ask him what he wants first. He is better for us in the dressing room, and I hope he starts in the FA Cup.

What if him leaving frees wages for a player who will actually play this season? Also the lad deserves more than to be kept around to be a glorified cheerleader

Abit OTT mind you, with the greatest of respect to the fella but every club he would go to would be a huge step down in stature after us.I look at it 2 ways, yes he has been great for us but dear me, the fact we have had someone of his quality play nearly 300 games for us is a reflection of what has happened to us over the last 10 years, granted none of it his doing but, circumstances benefited him to play for a great club like ours and he seized upon it and many hasn’t and he always give 100% when at times the quality was lacking.

I wish him nothing but the best he has been Good for us, but when I look back on him and his time at the club it will be with complicated emotions shall we say.

I dont think we need to worry about freeing up wages this season.

Like I said above, ask the lad what he wants and if he wants to leave we support him.

Did you read it?

🙄 Yes I read it. He shouldn't be given the option. The club should do what's for the best for the club.
