Luke O'Nien

boro would be perfect for him I reckon

they could do with the leadership, he wouldnt have to move or uproot his family

or perhaps he will do his coaching badges here...defoe was telling him he should

If he does leave there should be plans in place for him to be developed as a coach here when he stops playing
Maybe

"Luke would you like to go out on loan for the rest of the season?"

Luke - "no"
Obviously he doesn't have to leave but if he's not in our plans he should be told that. This keeping him around because he's good around the dressing room is doing him a disservice imo. He should be playing and playing regularly

Does anyone have an old onien shirt they have grown out of? Can be any size but reasonably priced?
I don’t want to say what for at the moment but I’m looking for one and there are none available unless new. It would be greatly appreciated. Message me if you can help. 👍
Do what I did and buy a typeset off eBay and get it put on.

Took last years away shirt and lettering to the Watford club shop as it’s the nearest place who would do it for me. The two lads in the shop were delighted to put it on for me as they said he’s a legend. :)

i doubt its that simple. maybes he's been given the option till the end of the season. i imagine in the summer he will make a full time decision, but between now and May he could be useful for us if he doesn't want to go out on loan, whilst simultaneously not being stopped by the club from leaving if he wants.

maybe he's just happy at sunderland being around world class players all day, working for a club he loves, where he knows all the staff, where he has been at home for 8 years, where his kids were born and go to school, where is learning every day and maybe working towards his coaching badges. theres millions of things that could be at play that we aren't aware of

its not just a simple case of 'wanting to play'

what happens if he goes somewhere with an arsehole manager, and toxic fans. doesn't get off to a good start, living away from home, and generally being miserable.

If he's happy not to play then that would be unexpected, he doesn't seem the type. As a club we look after players when they leave, he's also a clever bloke he wouldn't go somewhere that doesn't feel right.
He's better than just keeping around for morale and his character. He's still young enough to play at a decent level for a good few year yet.

There seems to be a coach for everything these day, fitness, set pieces, maybe he could specialise in the dark arts, and be our shithousing coach !!

Thanks. I don’t really have the time to do this but thanks for your advice. 👌

He's a premier league squad player being involved with the first team every week. That's far higher than 99% of footballers ever come close to achieving. We have him here on relative buttons I'd imagine as well. It's win win whatever he chooses to do tho and will end his career quite rightly a club legend. Top lad.

a la Kevin Ball?

From the home grown perspective I can’t see it happening. That needs addressing btw. We need 8 I think?

Patto - linked move away
Cirkin - 6 months left
Neil - 6 months left
O’Nien - linked move away
Mundle
Ballard
Rigg
Alese

What do we do if the top 4 leave?
I was wondering if we'd start to see us try and prepare for next season in this window by bringing in a couple of home grown players which might allow us to move these lads on while we can still get a fee.

Main issue though is domestic deals in january are expensive. Could home grown quota be taken up with loans maybe? Likes of Mainoo, McAtee etc could be options on loan if it means we could move on Neil for a few million

As a club, we've made great strides on the pitch, and are making the doubters, sit up & take notice of us, and if we're to keep progressing, we need to keep improving, which means bringing in even better players, and moving on players, who aren't able to force their way into an ever improving squad, and are deemed to be, surplus to requirements.

We cannot afford to keep players, purely out of sentimentality, otherwise, we'll end up standing still & we'll eventually stagnate & fail, and will find ourselves back where we started.

It's harsh, on the players who'll be moved on, but if we're to remain & establish ourselves in the Premier League, and regularly want to compete against those teams in the top half of the league, for European places, we must keep moving forwards, not backwards.

That's the nature of top level football.
