Jhon Lucumi - Transfer Rumour

If they didn't want to sell him this summer they won't want to sell him in January, unless we increase our offer, which we won't unless we are leaking goals and desperate. .

His value won't drop between now and January, not with all the interest.
If he won’t sign a new deal and they get someone else in they’ll sell. It all felt they couldn’t get someone they wanted in so didn’t sell him to us.

Moving into the last 18 months of his contract, his value will go down window on window

We dont really need him now? What positions could we do with?
I’m not sure we know yet. Central defender might still be a need. We’ve only signed one out and out centre half really. Wings would be the next possibility depending on Andingra and Talbi adapting and Mundles fitness.

Legal battle may be on way after failed Sunderland move – Player accepted Black Cats offer

Quotidiano Sportivo report today that the Italian side are facing moments of tension, when it comes to the Colombia international.

This isn’t just because Lucumi requested a move to Sunderland and had agreed to join on a contract worth €3m, but because he has not responded to Bologna’s new contract offer.

The Rossoblu have put forward €1.5m net in wages on a deal that runs until 2029, but have received no response.

The outlet believe the 27-year-old and his entourage could be prepared to invoke FIFA’s Article 17 to secure his release upon payment of a clause after more than three years at the club.

I think we’ll get this lad.

What options we’ll have in defence! Oh my days!

Difficult to see where he'd fit in now.

He did seem to be our top target though. I wonder if the idea is we try again for him and if we don't get him, we exercise the option to buy Geertrudia? But if we do get him, we don't exercise it?
Would love the lad but we would have to move people on . The defence is doing well at the minute so I reckon that ship has sailed .

If he’s as good as messrs Harvey, Speakman, Ghisolfi believe him to be we’d be mugs not to have him
We haven’t played any team of significance yet ( we will ) and that will tell us how we are travelling. An injury to Alderete could change everything. Mukiele is a RB who can play CB.
Agreed. We only have 1 specialist CB who is fit and also PL level. (Although Ballard looked great against West Ham)

I wonder if we'd signed him whether we'd have still gone for Geertruida

What is the point in an expiry of a release clause, if a player can argue that a team should have accepted an offer above the value of it after it expired?

Am I missing something obvious? What exactly is Lucumi trying to do, and why?

The article 17 thing is about giving players the ability to leave their contracts under exceptional circumstances I believe, provided certain criteria are met

Not necessarily to do with his expiring release clause
Ship has sailed move on
That's the Nukumi iirc

How would this even work? Let's say he has a case and is able to walk away from his contract. Could he sign somewhere straight away or would he need to wait until January 1st?

He would face a *possible* 6-month ban, though this is uncertain. I believe he's outside of the protected period, ie 3 years. inside the protected period a ban would be certain:

Outside the Protected Period:
  • If a player terminates a contract without just cause after the protected period, a sporting sanction (e.g., a 4–6 month ban) may still apply, but it’s less likely and depends on the circumstances. FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) or the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) evaluates factors like:
    • The reason for termination (e.g., was it close to just cause, like unpaid wages?).
    • Whether the player was induced by another club (Article 17, paragraph 4).
    • The impact on the former club (e.g., loss of a key player mid-season).
It seems to me he'd meet all 3 of these factors - there is no unpaid wages, Bologna would clearly argue he was induced by Sunderland, and they'd be losing him mid-season.
