That's a better way of putting it then. But that's my point. Despite being a good player, his signing has completely fucked us up and sent us all over the shop. More than any other.
I said it would be a poor signing when we bought him and got slated for it. Think it's quite clear he doesn't fit - not his fault mind and cannot fault his application.

More than 3. Good chance we don't beat Everton without his goal. Made one on his own against Swansea to get us a point, obviously his against the Mags and scored the second in the Burnley 2-1 win.
We beat Burnley and Everton 2-0, he scored the second in both games.

He may be on shitloads but he scored vital goals to keep us up so has paid for himself anyway.
His goals won us three points.

Rodwell's goals won us two points, and cost Hull two. Does that mean he was more valuable then? A better signing?

the problem is our signings in general are all over the shop. i don't know why we sign most of them, it seems just for convenience sake.

I don't think we would have beat Everton without his goal. Was absolutely crucial. Thought Burnley was a 2-1 but just double checked. His goals kept us up

The second goals in two 2-0 wins and you're discounting them

Got opening goal in the draw away at swansea, got the 2nd against everton ans burnley to seal the wins.
We swapped him for alitdore man!

Well, they weren't exactly crucial. It's the only way to do it close to fact. If you say "if he hadn't scored a second the other side could equalise", it's as legitimate to argue that his presence disrupted our team to such an extent we dropped lots of extra points.

He scored one more goal second half of last season than Wickham, and most people here have Wickham as being a useless bastard. He helped, but he was far from a saviour. We finished the season in a worse state than we were in before his signing. Certainly, Poyet looked very secure in his job when Defoe came in, and two months later was gone.

I fkn despair at times on here, without Defoe we would have been relegated, fact, his goal against Swansea and his goal against the mags,no other player at the club could have scored those goals, the mags would have beat us two weeks ago if he hadn't come on,he's past his best but he's still the best we've got.

So we have a shit defence and midfield and Defoe is to blame ?
Put the booze away and go to bed
Well what's the point signing someone who doesn't fit into our team, or we can't afford to play?

His signing has been a fucking disaster.

Got opening goal in the draw away at swansea, got the 2nd against everton ans burnley to seal the wins.
We swapped him for alitdore man!
Just because we swapped him for Altidore doesn't make it a good signing. Maybes we could have just sold Altidore, and took the loss, and signed somebody we actually wanted or needed.

Controversial view, but his signing has been a disaster.

Not so much as a player: despite being four years past his (pretty average) best, he's still our best goalscorer and an alright player.

But he turned Poyet's grinding, but solid, team into a complete shambles as Gus fannied about trying to find a way to accommodate him in the side. Convinced if he hadn't signed, we would have ground out a dull survival, Poyet would still be manager and we'd be moving on with a actual philosophy and at least trying to play good football.

Even after Poyet, Advocaat was at a complete loss how to us him, and now Allardyce his.

He's on unspeakable wages, until he's about 63, and three managers in a row have basically admitted there's no way to fit him into our side.

A genuinely, catastrophically awful signing, which we didn't need and didn't fit, which is the biggest shambles of the whole Congerton era of awfulness.
My god, you're smashed.

Cannot understand how anyone can think he's been a good signing.

He's on a fortune.
Hes past his best.
He's average.
But he's still an alright player.

But we have fucked ourselves over by repeatedly trying to figure out how to fit him in. We haven't got a clue.

Simply, we can't start him. He can't play a lone striker role as he isn't big enough or enough of a target man. He can't play out wide as he doesn't defend enough. He can only play as part of a front two. Which we can't play as it leaves our midfield too exposed.

He's been a dreadful signing. Not what we needed at all, on a fortune, at an age where we're stuck with him.
There's a cockwomble ladies and gentlemen.

A dreadful signing?! Get a grip man you utter helmet

Realise I'm in a tiny minority. And I've probably poorly phrased the opening post.

But he has been a very poor signing who has caused more harm than good, seen off one manager and utterly bamboozled another two.

He's a canny player (not the world bester some say like, but still canny), but we are a poorer side since he signed.

His goal against the mags alone last season kept us up.

Cheap at whatever price (never mind we got rid of the fucking donkey in the process).

Compared to Rodwell..well actually you cannot compare.

All those saying I'm a fool.

Say how we've improved since he signed? The positives he's brought to the team? Where you'd start him so we have a balanced side?

I don't see it.

He's a perfectly decent player, and if our midfield and defence were a LOT better, we'd be able to accommodate him and his ten to twelve goals a season. But they're not. And because of that, he should never have been signed. On a huge contract. Until he was drawing his pension.

Get a grip man, he was bought as a goal scorer and that's what he's done. You've got to look at the other 10 players before criticising Defoe.

More about what he represents.

He's on shitloads, and despite being clearly decent three managers have no idea how to fit him into our side. His introduced actually forced one manager to completely overhaul his tactics and gameplan, which saw him sacked.

He's been a mare. Probably a poor/unrepresentative thread title from me, tbf
I don't think it's his fault he's being paid whatever he's being paid, I think there are arguements on both sides, sometimes, I don't think today was a sometimes arguement. At Everton him and Fletcher did canny, for me they weren't responsible for it being 6, but they seemed to have paid the price. I hope the Everton 6-2 isn't Gus's 8-0 in terms of how we play.
