Jack Clarke

Exactly what they've been doing over the last week or so isn't it? Well not spend but work on the deals in anticipation of it.

As with last season after the initial outlay on Jobe and Seelt etc we went right to the end of the window working on deals like Rusyn who we'd been after for ages, none of those hotted up and were then completed (Burstow, Pembele, Aouchiche, Rusyn) until Stewart was In Southampton and signing, clearly related to that deal going through.
It's shite for us as fans but it's fairly responsible business.

Gutted he's leaving but if it's done it's done and we'll achieve nowt by continuing to dwell on it. I cling to the hope, based on not very much, that we'll see arrivals this week which will strengthen those areas where we've been lacking for years. Massive few days ahead for the club now. Without hope what have we got?

Surely our billionaire owner could have covered costs for new signings, while negotiating the best deal possible for clarke? If it meant dragging it out until the last day of the window and making 25m plus, so be it.

I get the feeling he doesn’t want to spend a penny of his own money, we have then jumped at the first half decent bid.

Leeds are in a far more financially stable position than us with parachute payments and a far better bargaining position.

Clubs were always going to know we’d shake hands at 20m , we finished 16th ffs.

I maybe could have taken 20 up front with add-ons. 15 just isn't good enough. What will Tottenham take out of that? Potentially 3 to 6 depending on who you believe. Leaves Sunderland with 12 to 9 for our star man and most saleable asset.

We need strikers to step up to the mark more than ever now. We didn't replace Amad's goal contribution when he left and that didn't bode for a good season and now we have to replace our top contributors' goals and assists from last year.

Moving to a footballing backwater to play in front of 20-odd thousand for a team that will be relegated this season? Good to see the lad has ambition ;)

Could well be another Maja situation - head turned for money and flopped after leaving. There's not many historically who have ever gone on to bigger and better than SAFC.

I understand that 'that's football' but am disappointed at the relatively low fee. How many times have we seen an unheard of Carlos Kickaball score on his Premier League debut on MOTD and heard Alan Green excitedly shrieking about him looking a snip at £40 million?

I'm also concerned that the money won't be used for team strengthening. And it does make you wonder who's next under the infamous Model. I wonder what bargain fees Rigg, Bellingham, Patterson, Cirkin, Ballard and Neil might fetch?

Leeds just got 40mn for Rutter.

I can understand him wanting to test himself in the premiership with better wages.

It's the club that has narked me with it's complete capitulation over the price.
Agree completely. Don't blame him.

Was always expecting him to go but FFS Ipswich. Lads going to be back where he started. If they’ve got him for anything under 25million they’ve had our pants down. A kick in the bollocks at a time when a bit of positivity starts to creep in.

The biggest worry for me is the utter charlatan who’s going to be in charge of re investing it. He did such a blinding job with the Stewart money I can hardly wait to see what cack he will stock pile this time, clogging up the wage bill.

So are you saying that players want to leave and we should just accept offers that don’t reflect the true value?

He’s playing football for Sunderland as a professional footballer. It’s not exactly a bad life
The lad wanted a move to the Prem.

We had one offer.

You think we should have forced him to stay. I think we should have granted his wishes rather than held onto an unhappy, depreciating asset. That’s a difference of opinion.

I reckon if there had been more interest in him, we could have got a better deal but as I said, with only one bidder, it’s easy to win an auction.

Fair enough.

So you would have forced him to stay against the lads wishes. I get some people will think we should have done that, I just don’t happen to agree.

No. We'd allow him to go when other clubs give us a fee we feel is adequate and meets his market value, given he's under contract and all that. As you would expect with your most valuable player.

We've been talking up how strong they are and how Clarke had two years left on his contract etc on the basis of getting around £10m for an injured Stewart with a year on his deal last season, as if this lot were strong and resolute like some kind of modern Daniel Levy. Turns out the Stewart deal was a freak one, probably due to Russell Martin's admiration of him.

This deal kinda smashes up the theory of how strong and resolute they are in the market.

Has it not been obvious that every move we have made since being taken over is to minimise his own outlay whilst trying to be competitive. The ownership group are not bad or trying to ruin the club, they just do not want to spend any substantial money to improve it. It is a shame but we do not run the club!
