I've met some truly mad Sunderland supporters .....

I am furious my Mag brother in law called to gloat Newcastle & Sunderland's status .....this should not happen early into November it's just shocking the rubbish we are putting on the pitch...

We've said it before time and again Reiv, that the lads born from the late 80s onwards have no idea what it was like from late 60s to early 90s.
Many away days could be dodgy and we spent most of it in Div 2 !! Imagine what it would have been like if we'd been in Div1 going to scouseland, the mancs etc every other week !!
I know the likes of you, @Cochise 2 ,@magcatcherhutch, etc were capable of handling yourselves and especially in the group you went with, but for 'lovers not fighters' like me and the lads I went with, we normally travelled wearing Brown cords just in case !!
I can easily rattle off places where we almost got a kicking, and where the fighting was crazy, and my lot never ever went looking for bother.
My Dad knew what was going on and there were games I wasn't allowed to go to even in my mid teens ! My son would not believe it if I prevented him going to a game because of the violence threat.
They were bad old days really with some terrible tragedies - Bradford, Heysel, Ibrox, Hillsborough as well as countless lads who died eg the whu lad on the train v millwall, Bolton lad at blackpool etc, but I am glad I lived through that period, as today it is just so plastic and sanitised. Hard to explain, but for example, two weeks ago at WHU it didn't feel like going to and seeing footy. Make sense ?

Yup, loads of sense, I was thinking the other day ( after this thread started) that away games seemed to be either we took loads & took over or it was knowing nods e.g. down Coldblow Lane ;-)

Have been in lots of great away followings eg
Liverpool 81
Villa 81
Wba 77
Norwich 77
Hull 76
but like u say, been in some pitiful ones too like wolves 81 where we were a whisker away from being badly done over.

Exactly, some aways with only a few lads were not only at the " handy" clubs, remember being at Bristol City , first away game, night match about '75 where we had about 10 lads & got surrounded on the away end. Most had hitched down & we caught the 11.30 pm train out ( inc Sammy), we had I think 1 train ticket between all of us & were made to buy more when we changed at Brum NS ;-)

Never been to the Bristols, but both dodgy in the 70s.
Rovers was a strange one as they only used to get 12000s and yet everyone hated going to eastville.

When your bored sometime ask me for the tales of Eastville, think we went there twice, both eventful. As a starter, first time there Sheff & me in their end at about 4am, it got paint sprayed with SAFC all ower. They were not impressed later in the day ;-)

& once at City & on the bus to Temple Meads after the game, full of their lot going to look for SAFC. When we pulled up I shouted & pointed down a street opposite the station, they piled off & me & Sheff trotted off in the opposite direction to the station. They reappeared when we were on our train & were not impressed when our little Cup Winners flag came out as we set off ;-) ;-)

I don't but seem to recall reading at the time he was just someone who did it all the time (try to get pics of himself in the papers) irrespective of event (sport, concert whatever) and I don't think he had any affiliation to SAFC.

Could be wrong though!

Aye I was a 15 year old . I'd never seen anything like it that day . I remember one of our lot got knocked over by a red Mini and the mounted coppers steaming into us to prevent us from turning the car over with the occupants still inside . Mad day all in all :lol:
