India v England - 4th Test

Very surprised with the England selections as Patel has batted well and picking Bresnan to strengthen the tail seems very negative. Hope Root proves me wrong though.

It shows the Patel selection for what it was, a mistake, KP can do some bowling if need be. To be fair to Bresnan, with Finn and Broad crocked it's either him, Onions (whose done nothing on tour) or the new kid, so it's fair enough.

Hopefully England can cobble together 300. Root looks a goodun', such good balance. How Compton was selected before him is a mystery. I can see Panasoup going for 1.5 an over on this. Shame Bresnan is playing but England will be in business with 100 more runs. History in the making.

I'm not so sure the Indians will get as bogged down as we did, they'll probably look to go over the top a lot more than we did. Also, I doubt England will be so negative with their field placings. Guess it will all depend on how many we make. We may have to attack to stay in the game, or perhaps we may be able to defend and let time run along.

Its a typical 'wait and see' wicket, in that we won't know how well/badly we batted until they've had a go. I must admit though - Compton, Trott, Pietersen and Bell all got themselves out, Cook got a shocker - the pitch wasn't doing much and India's bowlers didn't worry me at all. To lose only 5 wickets in 97 overs is a pretty good day, its just the slow run-rate which has kept India interested. Had we been 300-5 now, I'd say it was as good as won.

We may still make 300..... We might get away with 250..... If the wicket starts doing a bit tomorrow we could be in business, but if it holds until Day 3/4 as expected then it could be tough going. I don't expect them to bat poorly if there's nothing in it for our bowlers.

Anyone seen Root bowl? Hoping he can stick in for a while tomorrow morning with the bat. Could have been very ugly if he hadn't got his head down today and especially impressive given he will never have experienced anything like that before. Shades of Cook in his first test ...

Think Onions would have been a very good bowler on this track as he's wicket to wicket and consistent. Hope Bresnan has rediscovered his bowling in the past couple of weeks.

Yes. Produces the occasional cracker but plenty of half trackers as well. Think Michael Vaughan and you will get the picture.

A debut century from Root would make me very happy.

Do you think Bumble said that just to annoy EB? 'There's no such thing as a English green top, hasn't been since the 70's. It's a myth.'

Swann's batting seems to have improved again in the past 6 months or so. Going well this morning. Would be incredible if Root got a ton

300 up. The rest of the runs are bonus from here.

He's been in top form today. On about Root being a child of the 90's and not knowing who the Beatles or Stones were. Mods, rockers, New Romantics, glam rock..... Probably bright up on Oasis and Pulp!

Then he did his Boycott and Trueman impressions :D

Ah well, lovely innings and a shame he couldn't get to 3 figures. Should move the game on though.

And his summing up of the Michael Vaughan interview..... 'Joe Root is a great player, takes after me - bloody Yorkies'

This little cameo from Swann has had the desired effect, Indian shoulders starting to slump......

Jimmmmmmmmmmyyyyyyyyy.

superb catch.

good batting earlier in the day, Prior once again reliable as ever

It's broke, his missus called out an emergency plumber.

Tough chance but could cost us, Gambir is the key.

Was just about to say we need to get Sachin, if he had got in, he could have gone big in what might be his last test. Gambir is the big one now, but if the wickets are falling at the other end, we're doing our jobs well.
