They weren't really. Cirkins was a poor effort but wasn't a sitter. It was just too high to generate the power he needed. Roberts miss when clean through was a 20 yard shot and you can't really go down the route of blaming a centre forward for shaving the post and then saying it was a sitter because he didn't pass. What if he had slightly overhit or underhit the pass? what if Embleton had also shot wide from an angle? Reasonable opportunities but no more.
I didn't think the pass to Embleton was on for Stewart, the other centre back was coming round on the cover and would have cut it out or blocked any shooting opportunity.

I haven't seen it back mind so I may be wrong.

Think that is why Owls fans and players we’re celebrating so vigorous at the end - like we got away with one there

The two you mentioned (Gooch and O'nien) are two of our most important players yet for some bizarre reason get a lot of stick on here.🤷‍♂️

Gooch and Roberts playing like strangers first half, the play down that side first half was atrocious.

Agreed that we should have capitalised on our pressure at the start of the 2nd half but fuck me we’re winning! Think we’d got beat!

Our position is better than theirs, it’s as simple as that. They’d have came here to win the game, and at worst hang on for the draw. They lost. That wasn’t in their plan.

I’ve been asked “would you swap current score situation, being a goal down and bringing them back to the SOL?”

My answer is no chance!!!!

Rather be in our current situation
Absolutely. It is situations like this where being at home second can work against you.

I expect them to come out flying on Monday. We need to contain that but not sit back. If we have bodies back, they will get too many crosses in, win corners or lure us into free kicks. We look vulnerable to high balls. We need to press high and take the game to them but without too many risks. If we are attacking down the left, move those in the middle over to support but pull the right wing back to cover centre and defence. Keep them stretched and make sure they don't score in the first half hour.

If they go through that first 30 minutes without a decent attempt on goal then the crowd will get anxious, will certainly go quiet and might start having a bit of a go. That is the time we then need to push a bit more before half time.

Their problem is they look shakey at the back. Their keeper didn't seem confident and their defence has mistakes in it. We scored from one, they nearly gifted Stewart another and there were a few other moments. With Stewart, Pritchard and Roberts pressuring, they can't afford to throw too many forward or make any mistakes.

Keep them working like we did and for them getting those two goals will feel like more and more of a mountain to climb. If we get a second, bring McGeady on for the last 20 minutes and really start giving them a headache at the back.

This is where I'm more confident with Neil in charge. Parkinson or Ross would have us try to defend deep for 90 minute and it would fail. Johnson would fail to identify their threats and put out a random selection, throw everything at getting that second goal. Neil will come with a plan for how he wants the ebb and flow of the game to go, based on the oppositions past performances, and make sure we are the ones dictating that, and are set up to cope with it.

Won five of their last six at home, averaging three goals a game. Not saying that means they will win but is clearly why they are confident.
With Neil in charge we've beaten
Wigan, Sheffield, Oxford
Drawn with
Rotherham, Plymouth
Lost to
MK Dons 14 games ago
Scoring 8 conceding 4
I'm never confident in anything we do but I'm not writing us off yet

First off how we didn't end up on the end of a 3 or 4 nil defeat is beyond me. Thought you was better all over the pitch especially down the wings. Thought Gooch had a great game. I do feel we played in to your hands my just punting the ball aimlessly for majority of the game but then again that was probably down to the high press you put on us. Also need to give a shout out to who I thought was one of your key men and having a look at some of the threads on here got a lot of stick. I thought onein had a great game. He controlled bannan so well and didn't give him a chance to take control of the game as he done on so many occasions this year. Honestly after the game I was happy it was only 1-0. Can't wait for Monday to see if we actually go for it instead of watching the sitting back we did last night. Do feel we play our best football at home especially when we push forward. Was always worried about playing at stadium of light just for the fact the noise you fans create to behonest is unreal at times and honestly think 1 0 overall especially after the game is a great result for us.

Also your managers tactics was spot on to so shout out to him.
Fairplay to you mate!

Will be a different game at Hillsborough for many reasons..... and it's certainly no good fro anyone's health all this (especially with our previous).

For what this is worth, I though your gaffer Darren Moore was a class act in his interview.....

You sure you weren't watchin in a mirror , cos it sounds like you're describing Cirkin and Clarke ?

Sheff Wed seemed to overload that side IMO, so we had more space down the right but particularly first half it felt like Gooch and Roberts had never met before.

Honestly mate that's it. If its a normal league game yea where pissed off with the way we played and the fact we lost. I feel we got let off the hook. It's a 2 leg tie and me watching it thought you had the chances to put it to bed especially the start of the second half. The fact now we get to regroup and play at Hillsborough where we have the best form at home in the league is surely the reason of probably more relief rather then celebraiting knowing where still well in this. But like I've also said it's going to be really hard for us with the form your in.

TBH

If I was a Wednesday fan I wouldnt have been to gutted with a 1-0 defeat. Maybe not to happy with performance, but with Wednesday perspective hat on accept playing for a draw.

It will be totally different on Monday.

Im reckoning pennas

Whoever scores 1st will win imo

If its Wednesday I wish them well, and hope they win final

FTM

I think you are being a bit too generous. I thought we were a bit fortunate to be ahead at half time when both teams were poor. We had a great 20 minute spell but your players threw their bodies on the line and got some crucial blocks in which kept it to 1-0. You then had a decent spell yourself. 1-0 was about right imo.
This is exactly how I saw it too. We were a bit lucky to have got a goal from a defensive mistake, and rebound. Yes we could have scored two but on a different day we also could have drawn, and that really would have been gutting considering how poor Wednesday were.

Their longevity in association with remaining in L1 has unfortunately put them under a negative moniker at times, in the same way Cattermole and O'Shea got roped in with some of the absolute dross who threw the towel in for us like Kone, N'Dong , Rodwell and Djillibodji. Those first 4 players mentioned have never given anything less than 100% for SAFC. I personally doubt O'Nien could survive in the Championship, but just an opinion.

If you read the "Onien" thread , there's loads saying "he was shit tonight" . FFS what were these people watching ?
He did a job on Bannon , marked him out of the game for 70 mins.
Pisses me off that it takes a fan of our opponents to see a lot of what our own are blind to.
😩

That’s because most fans only watch the ball and what players do with it. It’s an old saying but more people than ever don’t properly understand football.... bit like me and rugby!

Moore is a class act full stop... a Bobby Robson of his era

Was that down to the way we bossed them and stifling Bannan?
We worked for that win, and Stewart chasing his man down to get his chance, then staying switched on when the goalie saved, was earned by the work ethic of the team.
