Appreciate the point you’re making but I think it’s slightly different.

O’Nien and Gooch’s performances have often been quite poor this season. I appreciate they’re pragmatic picks and are very much horses courses but that’s not to say they’ve played well consistently. Both have had stick because their product has often been below the standard required.

I’m a bit young to argue confidently but I’m not sure that was that the case with Stiles (it’s an argument that’s made about Henderson at a higher level in the modern game)

Gooch had completely lost his way under Johnson. Judge him by the last ten games and Neil is getting best out of him.
Playing a much simpler game and is highly effective with crossing, possession, defending, availability, being part of a unit, hurting defences etc etc, transformed would be a good description.
On current form he is one of the best players in the division. Fingers crossed he can sustain it.

First off how we didn't end up on the end of a 3 or 4 nil defeat is beyond me. Thought you was better all over the pitch especially down the wings. Thought Gooch had a great game. I do feel we played in to your hands my just punting the ball aimlessly for majority of the game but then again that was probably down to the high press you put on us. Also need to give a shout out to who I thought was one of your key men and having a look at some of the threads on here got a lot of stick. I thought onein had a great game. He controlled bannan so well and didn't give him a chance to take control of the game as he done on so many occasions this year. Honestly after the game I was happy it was only 1-0. Can't wait for Monday to see if we actually go for it instead of watching the sitting back we did last night. Do feel we play our best football at home especially when we push forward. Was always worried about playing at stadium of light just for the fact the noise you fans create to behonest is unreal at times and honestly think 1 0 overall especially after the game is a great result for us.

Also your managers tactics was spot on to so shout out to him.
Suspect it'll be roles reversed at Hillsborough, fully expect it to be us that are looking long and sitting deep.

I do think it will be a different game at home. I think we will be the team looking to go forward more (we have to be). My only worry is neil seems to have you really organised as a unit. Also as the game goes on and it's 1 - 0 we will be throughing everything forward which leaves us open to counter and as you probably so our cb's aren't the quickest. Going to be a very interesting game.

If you read the "Onien" thread , there's loads saying "he was shit tonight" . FFS what were these people watching ?
He did a job on Bannon , marked him out of the game for 70 mins.
Pisses me off that it takes a fan of our opponents to see a lot of what our own are blind to.
😩

The two you mentioned (Gooch and O'nien) are two of our most important players yet for some bizarre reason get a lot of stick on here.🤷‍♂️

I remember someone posting on here yesterday (cant remember who) saying that Gooch would handle the occasion and atmosphere cos he has played in front of sell outs before.

He was outstanding.

What a great post mate. Be prepared for some stick tho.

you coming on to us could be your downfall... allowing us in behind and as you say you lack pace at the back

I think you are being a bit too generous. I thought we were a bit fortunate to be ahead at half time when both teams were poor. We had a great 20 minute spell but your players threw their bodies on the line and got some crucial blocks in which kept it to 1-0. You then had a decent spell yourself. 1-0 was about right imo.
That was a 3 nil match all day long. Cirkin's tame header, Robert's miss when clean through and Stewart's failure to play in Embo were pretty shocking misses. Wednesday's only threat was through their dominant aerial presence, but apart from that they created nothing of note.

@Herberthall shockingly another Sheff Wed fan happy with the result last night. No idea how you could possibly be wrong about something

I was a bit surprised how ordinary you were. It seemed very one dimensional and predictable. I expect it to be tougher on Monday. Like others I would be happy for you to go up if we don't.

I wish Cirkin had put that header away it would have eased my nerves a bit. Just hope we don't rue this misd

Best games of the season if you’re a neutral. Worst stress and tension when you’re involved.

Sunderland hold an advantage as they’re 1-0 up half way through.

I expect Wednesday to be a completely different side on Monday to what you saw last night.

I’m looking forward to this one with no pressure whatsoever.

They weren't really. Cirkins was a poor effort but wasn't a sitter. It was just too high to generate the power he needed. Roberts miss when clean through was a 20 yard shot and you can't really go down the route of blaming a centre forward for shaving the post and then saying it was a sitter because he didn't pass. What if he had slightly overhit or underhit the pass? what if Embleton had also shot wide from an angle? Reasonable opportunities but no more.

Here’s how I saw the game. The first half for the most part I thought both teams just cancelled each other out and everything seemed rushed by both sides. To take a lead right before half time was a real bonus. The second half I thought we came flying out of the traps and created some decent chances to maybe take a 2-0 or even a 3-0 lead to your place. I think your manager made a good call by going 5 across the middle and yous ran the game for the last 30 mi utes without really creating much. I think Monday will be a completely different game with yous perhaps flying out the traps early. If we can get Broadhead out there for our counter attacks I feel it could work in our favour. It’s set up for an exciting tie and to be honest I think it’s a shame this isn’t the final as I would imagine the atmosphere created at Wembley would be immense. Any how’s I hope we do it on Monday and get to the final, however if yous do it then I would be rooting for yous against either Mk or dinosaur wanderers.
