I don't get the dislike for him. He isn't the best in the world and is a league 1 player. Never hides and sees a lot of the ball which means he will make errors once in a while

he is the least of our issues. And the manager kept him on all game so I trust his judgement.
He’s not the most technically gifted but he has a lot of other qualities that our other midfielders have lacked when we’ve been down here and make him an important player for us. His energy and shithousery alone make him an important player in games like last night.

You can’t knock his effort and work rate and that’s all we can ask from players who are selected. But he makes errors a bit more than once in a while. I don’t understand the ‘least of our issues’ statement as I think he is one of a few that we have.

The reasons for Neil playing him are justifiable; he’s a fit runner who does the dirty work off the ball. It’s a pragmatic selection. But to be a better side, we’d need someone with a fraction more quality and competency on the ball too.

Tbf 1-0 is a good result for both teams, the tie is still wide open and both teams should back themselves to progress to Wembley.

Not trying to sound like an arse but I couldn't believe how bad you were, hardly put us under any pressure at all. That being said you're a different beast at home and I doubt you'll play that poorly again so I think frustration is still my overriding emotion. Happy we've got an advantage, but it should have been more and I just hope we don't regret it

Spot on this, exactly my feelings too.

Never complain about a win, but I feel we’ve let them off the hook slightly

Heard ‘1-0 is a great result’ from alot of Sheff Wed fans, I find it suprising considering we havent lost in about 15 games.

I also think we will score at Hillsborough.
It was after that performance, Wednesday should have lost that game 2 or 3 nil, you dominated the 2nd half but didn't take your chances....,game on

First off how we didn't end up on the end of a 3 or 4 nil defeat is beyond me. Thought you was better all over the pitch especially down the wings. Thought Gooch had a great game. I do feel we played in to your hands my just punting the ball aimlessly for majority of the game but then again that was probably down to the high press you put on us. Also need to give a shout out to who I thought was one of your key men and having a look at some of the threads on here got a lot of stick. I thought onein had a great game. He controlled bannan so well and didn't give him a chance to take control of the game as he done on so many occasions this year. Honestly after the game I was happy it was only 1-0. Can't wait for Monday to see if we actually go for it instead of watching the sitting back we did last night. Do feel we play our best football at home especially when we push forward. Was always worried about playing at stadium of light just for the fact the noise you fans create to behonest is unreal at times and honestly think 1 0 overall especially after the game is a great result for us.

Also your managers tactics was spot on to so shout out to him.
good post.
fwiw i see a lot of folk who say that wednesday weren't at their best but neither were we. we had a spell early in the 2nd half where we played some decent stuff but that was about it. we were nowhere near as good as we can be, just like you.

I don’t disagree with any of that. I don’t feel like it was a 4-0 performance though. 2-0 would have been about right. A controlled, deserving win but not a rout

Well maybe not. But fact remains we had enough clear cut chances to win 4-0.

2-0 would've been a great result, but I don't think anyone would say we were lucky to win 4-0 had that happened.

Quite surprised the bookies have us as quite clear favourites to progress, with Wycombe favourites to go up. Still think it’s 50/50 in our game.

Fair points aye. Had we won 4-0 it would have been absolutely ruthless having created few genuine opportunities and therefore it would be deserved.

Can I offer an unbiased neutral observation on the match. I predicted 3-0 and I think it felt like that instead of 1 but it is what it is. Any lead is priceless though so it's definitely advantage Sunderland but home support could turn things but Wednesday will have to do much better with key players stepping up unlike last night. Both teams would grace the Championship with full allocation away support but I've already had a tenner on Sunderland beating Wycombe at Wembley so will stick with that. On last nights evidence only 1 team played football and Wednesday will have to drastically improve to level things up.

Be close but draw on Monday.

The two you mentioned (Gooch and O'nien) are two of our most important players yet for some bizarre reason get a lot of stick on here.🤷‍♂️
There were times when Matt busby and Alf Ramsey got lots of stick for playing Nobby stiles.
I suppose Nobby could say to everybody for every Bobby Charlton you need the likes of us
Sorry I’m too busy cleaning my medals

Appreciate the point you’re making but I think it’s slightly different.

O’Nien and Gooch’s performances have often been quite poor this season. I appreciate they’re pragmatic picks and are very much horses courses but that’s not to say they’ve played well consistently. Both have had stick because their product has often been below the standard required.

I’m a bit young to argue confidently but I’m not sure that was that the case with Stiles (it’s an argument that’s made about Henderson at a higher level in the modern game)

He’s perfect for this division absolutely perfect and that’s why every manager plays him.
Anyone who can’t see the relevance and importance of his qualities on this league is for me judging him against a different standard to that at which we actually play.
Nicely put

Maybe that should have been putt

I honestly think posters on here think Wigan, Rotherham, MK Dons, etc,etc...players put in 10 out of 10 performances week in week out.

They don't.
