Me and a couple of mates had become regulars in the William in Birtley, usually just us in the back room midweek, playing pool. We went in to celebrate one of my mates birthdays. After a few, the landlord comes over with a round of drinks, saying, "you've been drinking in my pub for about a year, well at least its legal now, this ones on me"Illegal, Farmers Rest Newcastle Haymarket. I'd have been 14. Asked for two pints of brown ale. Barmaid asked if bottles would do to guffaws around the bar. Still got served.

Must be shite for the aspiring illegal drinker these days. Turned out regular in the 90’s age 16-17 and don’t recall ID ever being a big issue for me or mates. You see lads and lasses getting ID’d now that look comfortably in their 20’s!
