F1 2021

Even back then there were a lot of people round the cars, just now it is a lot more choreographed.
from memory tyre stops were done for puncture safety, rather than performance in the 60s\70s and a lot of the 80s? i know they had refuelling in the early 80s for a short time but from memory even up to 87 pit stops werent *that* common? silverstone 87 you can see its the choreography...

i reckon its more by the time of 94 and the second go at refueling where the teams are fully choreographed.

since then its been marginal gains. pretty sure between say 89 & 93 a good pit stop was considered to be 7-8 seconds? where the tv graphics would only time the car as it was stopped, whereas now the times are so tiny that the tv changed to timing the entire pitlane entry\exit. my guess would be whenever the tv changed to that timing feature is when it became the "big" pro pitstop.
Just watched footage of 1977 race and it looks so amateurish.
hunt at fuji in 76 is the same, although watching it makes me think of a current nascar\indy car stop... :-D

If I had to say, I'd say about 12s around then. I seem to remember 10s pitstops being good in the early-mid 90s and just as they might have came down, there was the refuelling era, which was the main part of the stop, so they didn't get quicker again until refuelling was stopped.

Could be wrong, though

Mind, under 2s to change 4 tyres is just increadible.

Re fuelling used to be entertaining

Back in the day they used a big can basically and they knew it was full when the fuel spilled out over the driver giving them 30 laps to enjoy some nice chemicl burns!!

I'm totally against refuelling, because all the stats show that overtaking halved during that era.

But it was interesting, it added to the show.

the cars are WAY too heavy and large now. They really need to cut back on them. Maybe refuelling actually is a good idea, now that they've planned cars that are better for overtaking? They could knock 50kg off them. Mind, the cars are 200kg too heavy. Looks like the new regs are not actually any smaller than current, which is a surprise.

I can't believe the cars are over 5 metres long!

I don’t think pit stops were as bad as people are thinking. I’d say about 5/6 seconds in the late 80s and early 90s when there was no refuelling. There was no pit lane speed limit either until a bit later. Mid 90s I think

Yeah, I think I just have a bad memory of it. Mind, I was about 10 years old, so there's that!

I can remember Mansell chasing down Senna and pitting to get a trye advantage at Jerez, and the commentary team going ape about how quick the change was.

It was about a 6 second stop, from memory, but at the time seemed incredible.

Look great - custom race suits and one off helmet designs just for Monaco.

Its so much more than a race - i went to a jewellers in Monaco and i was refused entry!!

Its an amazing place.

We pulled into Casino Square in a camper van June 1990.

The cops were there before the wheels stopped asking us to put our tops on

By the time we came down from Turin in a convoy looking for a session a few weeks later they just let us get on with it!

What a session anaaaarl. Sorrows well and truly drowned.

Some old names here and some recent ones too of both drivers and constructors.

Tyres and wheels going all over and watch the cameraman on 2.00 minutes in when heidfeld crashes
