Get a better paid job (or jobs if you have more than one). If you have more outgoings than income then you're pretty much insolvent tbh.

From previous threads it's no great secret that you like the odd night out mind and that's hardly an essential when you're on the bones of your arse.
The first bit isn’t gonna happen as I’ve hit the pay ceiling I’m quite flush these days man. Debt plan will be finished in March. It’s taken 10 years but I’ve still managed to get out every week. If you’ve always been a goer-outer, a night is is pretty much essential for your sanity.
No offence but you sound dull as dishwater...apart from the holidays
Some people just don’t have our bon viveur spirit. A work with a lad who has his house, new car and new wife, but on his stag night he could only muster 2 friends. Tragic that like.

Have a monthly (decent) budget in my head for clothes etc. Don’t scrimp overly on holidays and do quite a few trips away and nights out as a couple.

After that I’m pretty watchful in terms of deals though, regularly check MSE etc. Big goal is to retire as early as possible.

Was in pretty good shape financially until I split up with my missus a few years back - ended up losing out on my equity in the house, taking on 100% of the marital debt and having a hefty solicitor bill to pay, all of which put me back to square one.

Have had to knuckle down to clear any outstanding debt since then and get back on the housing ladder but there's light at the end of the tunnel. Can be a bit annoying at times to think about what might have been financially but I'm far happier now regardless so don't dwell on that much.
Had a similar scenario with the ex years ago. We were ticking along nicely, had a great apartment in a top spot then she wanted to move to a house and start a family. Extended ourselves and bought a great house with a pool near the beach and then split up 18months later in the middle of the global financial crisis. Walked away with relatively fuck all from years of buying property but I knew I earned decent money and could knuckle down and she'd be fucked comparatively.

Never been happier now with new wife and 8 year old daughter and multiple properties. It helps that the wife earns more than me like :p and she's financially savvy. Like chalk and cheese from the ex.

Not like me then I was one of the only people ever to fill our club with standing room only 2002 my 50 th

My parents hate any subscriptions or contracts to keep paying, such as pcp or entertainment subscriptions, they would much prefer to buy a cd, or buy a car. Reading this thread, and mocking them in the past...... it transpires that it kind of makes for more peace of mind. The expense is taken, and no commitment for paying money out going fwd.

This might sound daft but I agree. Due to relationship breakdowns I'm currently renting and saving cash to buy a house outright I reckon in 3-4 months I'll have enough for my needs. Then be rent / mortgage free.

I'm. Self employed with my own business so having the biggest outgoing taken care of will give me massive peace of mind plus allow me to take more risks to grow my business

Had to budget if you wanted anything in the seventies and eighties, no easy credit/debt traps then. Always carried it forward and paid for things when I have the cash. As a teenager used to take the clothes back to the shops on Boxing day sales day, get refunded, get the same clothes back at half price and pocket the difference. Don't do it now mind, don't buy clothes. Parents and relations were none the wiser, didn't want to hurt their feelings.

I always chuckle at these threads. People giving it the big un about how well set they are, when all it takes is a divorce and they could be on skid row. And statistically, quite a few of you will.
Aye their mrs will take full advantage of their thriftiness and get a toy boy :D

I do sometimes wonder what it must be like to not have to check your bank balance before you buy anything over £50, or to get to the end of the month without breathing a sigh of relief. I’ve never been in a position to do either, and I don’t think I ever will.

How do you go from having relatively fuck all to owning multiple properties?
