Do we need to do a Coventry

100% yes.

Their two strikers cost about 15 million. They have scored the winning goals in the cup to get them to semis and are in great form, both with 16 goals each so far this season in all competitions.

That is the blue print we need with the clarke cash, proven strikers none of these kids who have done bugger all who may or may not be decent in 5 years.
Isn't this the classic "easier said than done" , especially when it comes to strikers. The likelihood of them being good is in a fairly direct relationship with their cost. Everyone is looking for goal scorers and is no easy task. Good luck to those in charge.

How do you know that? Let's see who goes in the summer and how he spends the money, eh?
Yes I think this summer will be the acid test of the owners long term intentions, new manager/coach required, the inevitable moving on of some of our assets Clarke, Ballard, Neil, Hume, Patterson how many can we hang onto, but more importantly how will any income received be reinvested and on what?

Thing is, though, we've had two here on loan that we knew were capable of scoring goals and wouldn't stump up for them. The very fact that we (allegedly) paid more for Rusyn than Ipswich did for Broadhead is astounding.

Gykoress and Hamer were a massive loss. But they reinvested 35 million well and we would likely snap your hand off for their season. They stand a good chance still of making the playoffs and an FA Cup Semi.
I'm hoping this is what we will do this summer. This should be "the model" and mot just signing young players with no experience.

I still can't see us spending 8 million on a striker like.

We've been very fortunate that despite our previous shite owners we re-employed Robins and have stuck by him and backed him
Stability and a good recruitment team have helped massively

We just really need to invest in an experienced CDM and striker and we'll be challenging for top 6. A half decent winger to replace Clarke too .

Money won’t be reinvested and what’s the likelihood we get a competent coach. Both Ipswich and Coventry have a very good manager we have just had one of the worst ever and this board was happy to write a quarter of the season off with a caretaker.

You would have be either very naive or an utter optimist to think this board is investing 15 plus in the squad in the summer what little money we have spent has been spent pretty poorly.
How much have Coventry and Ipswich each spent on players transfer fees since the end of last season?

You have to say that ÂŁ10m for Stewart is looking like an absolute master stroke. A significant percentage of the young lads brought in are looking off the pace but Clarke was an amazing bit of business. Jobe and Auchiche are looking similar. Does anyone really expect all our gambles to be wins?

Doesn’t matter who we sell. The owner isn’t prepared to put money into the club. It’s embarrassing to compare us to clubs like Coventry and Ipswich.
This is just simply not true. Before last summer the last time we'd made money on a player was George Honeyman, must be about 5 years ago. How do you think we've paid fees, and often decent fees, for players, it certainly isn't season card sales. Whether he's putting enough in is a different matter.

If you only look at expenditure, we've spent around ÂŁ34m according to Transfermrkt. And that is including all of Simms' add-ons, including the ÂŁ5m promotion addon, which we're still well away from having to cough up.

Add in the ÂŁ35m we got for Hamer and Gyokeres and we're actually underspending.

True. Broadhead was a guarantee of goals.

Coventry are projected to do worse than last season in the league as are Boro.

Good job Robins doesn't work to projections. If you'd done a projection back in September, we'd have been favourites for relegation.

As it is, we're 4 points behind and a game in hand on Norwich in 6th. We have some tough games to come up, including against 3 of the top 4 so we may need some unlikely help. Norwich play Leicester today and while I hope both lose, a Leicester win is more favourable than a Norwich one.

I remember comparing us just a couple of months ago to last seasons playoff contenders and we were looking great.

Cov and Boro were struggling. Millwall were in the relegation zone.

But Cov are a prime example of a club that had to make some difficult decisions, took some time to gel, but are now looking like a far more rounded team then they were last season.

Gykoress and Hamer were a massive loss. But they reinvested 35 million well and we would likely snap your hand off for their season. They stand a good chance still of making the playoffs and an FA Cup Semi.

Ipswich a different but similar example of a club that didn’t sell players for big money but have invested in every position to create a strong team.

If the board haven’t got the money to spend big this summer but we can be cost neutral (no reason to think we can’t based on previous windows) I’d reluctantly take selling Clarke and Neil to fund a full team strengthening. Whether we spend it wisely is a different question but Cov are a good example of a club that sold a couple of top players to improve overall.
The next 8 games will tell us if we have anywhere near the suitable replacements already imo but yes I think we have no choice but to sell, as said a million times if a premier league team regardless of who it is comes in offering say 8m for someone who's cost a million and offer them 5 times the wages then there's nowt we can do

Finish in the play offs then sell their best players.
Following season don't finish in the play offs.
🤔

It happens. Huddersfield were beaten Playoff finalists a couple of seasons ago and struggled last season and this. Barnsley were beaten finalists and then got relegated.

And a funny Playoff related story. According to Robins, both Gyokeres and Hamer told him and the team that they were not re-committing to the club on the coach on the way back from Wembley. Selling them was taken out of our hands by the players themselves.

But comparing both seasons, we've accomplished far more this season so far. The end result is still up for grabs but we now have a solid team that have lengthy contracts so should we fail to go up, we have a base for next season and no required gelling period.

Think the mistake people are continuing to make here is to see things through a cashflow/accountancy lens where what matters is having money "available" or seeking to be cost-neutral. None of these things are what our owners are about - they're about gouging every point they can and making decisions that they think will best fit their business model in terms of their future financial returns. There is no way that the people who run the club aren't spending money because they're short of money. If we sell Jack Clarke (which we will) then there is no way that any money we get in will be meaningfully reinvested, they'll just rinse and repeat on more players that they can stick in the Championship shop window.

Our lot need to understand that to realistically compete, we need money to reinvest. That means Clarke and possibly 1 more leaving. Bringing in 35-40m and then build a competitive squad.

That Sakamoto looks a player as well as the 2 strikers. Those 3 will end up on possibly 45+ goals between them . They got Sakamoto from Ostende ÂŁ2 million. They seem to have a good scout network.
