Clough - Nobody Ever Says Thank You

Imagine players doing that now.

No chance. You can barely get some footballers to go into training on time....despite earning more in a week than we do in a year.

Different game now. There are things that are better now though as well, two sides to every coin.

Gerry Hogan was an apprentice at Leeds when Cloughie arrived. it was the days when Duncan MxKenzie was jumping over Minis!

The first words he said to Hogie as he passed him in the corridor was " get your hair cut big boy"

Cloughie was guest of honour at the annual prize giving at English Martyrs in Hartlepool in the 80's when he was managing Forest. He had with him the disgraced Forest Chairman who had recently been released from his jail term and Cloughie was showing public support.

His connection with the school dated back to when it was St Bedes and he was given use of the gym for indoor training when he managed Hartlepool.

He was entitled to a fee for his role on the evening . He was presented with a collage of wonderful pictures of old Hartlepool which thrilled him. he the took out a cheque book and donated money to the school. it was for the same amount as his fee.

How the fuck he got John McGovern to understand how to put football boots on and have that career is miraculous. McGovern went to Henry Smiths school that played rugby!!!

The pride shone through on just a few occasions" the No 9 wasn't bad tonight" ( Nigel had got a couple)

According to an old poolie that I know, he was "better than Hutchison". Seems strange, how he never got a single cap for Scotland.

2 European Cups stands up in any era. Like Paisley his achievements arent recognised enough imo. Forest are the only club whove won the European Cup more than their domestic league.
He probably would have won another at Derby if the Italians hadnt been up to their usual tricks with referees.

Sky just focus on on the premier league.

It is nice gesture. Most footballers must think they do their bit by visiting kids in hospital at Christmas.

Remember very well the campaign to get him & Taylor to come to Sunderland. Often wonder which Clough we would have got if he had come, the Clough of Derby/Forest or the Clough of Leeds/Brighton !

As @OLDROKERENDER mentions, October 1978, after Adamson left for Leeds, was the time when Clough was most strongly linked with SAFC. There was a period of about 2 weeks when there seemed to be a glimmer of hope that it just might happen.

Clough was everyone’s first choice at the time:

Chants of "Brian Clough’s Red’n’White Army" at Oldham (IIRC the first game after Adamson's departure).

The club publicly confirming that they had made an approach to Forest.

The club encouraging fans to attend the home game with Stoke the next week to show how big the club was to encourage Clough to come.

Chants of "We all want Brian Clough" (to the tune of 'We're going down the pub' from Sham 69's Hurry Up Harry which was in the charts at the time) at the Stoke game.

And, of course, SCRATCH. Although I must admit I wasn't really sure what they were actually for - or did - at the time. Was anyone on here part of SCRATCH?

SCRATCH I think stood for "Supporters Club Roker Action (for) Taylor And Clough Here".
