'Clough became an increasingly rare sight at the training ground. On one occasion he burst in just when the players had finished training. He went round insulting each player in turn. "You've been crap since you got that new deal", he told Pearce. "Stop rabbiting at refs", he told Jemson. "Buy a house in Nottingham or fuck off back to Barnsley", he said to Crossley. For each player there was a different put down until he got to Roy Keane. "I love you, Irishman", he said.

Highly recommend this book.

I met Ronnie Fenton a few years ago. He was born in South Shields and worked under Cloughy at Forest for 16 years as a coach and scout.
He told me that when the Miners Strike was on Cloughy would invite a couple of hundred coppers to a home match and a couple of hundred miners to the next home match. Freebies all round...... and everybody loved him.
Simples.

Life-long socialist.

Took his players on the picket lines on more than one occasion.

It's a fact. Just his brilliant man management. He inspired people to play way beyond their abilities and creates an excellent team morale.
Apparently Larry Lloyd once told him that he was the best football manager there's ever been, but if he's walked into a pub whilst Lloyd was drinking there, he'd walk out.

Bloody hell there's another one Larry Lloyd. Worse than average but Cloughy made him.

Got to know Ian Woan well when he was at Swindon.
Some real Cloughie stories.
Woan on bench as a kid at Selhurst Park told to fetch him a drink before the game.
Came back with a coffee, had a right go and told him not that f***ing drink and gave him instructions to a pub and delivered a vodka.
After the game coach on the way back was ordered to stop outside some posh houses. Clough got off and walked up a large drive picking up some cut flowers off the lawn. Cloughie knocked on the door, no answer and got back on coach saying Barbara would like these.
Weeks later playing Charlton coach on a detour back outside the same house Cloughie got off and pushed some money through the letter box.
Wonderful :)

John Robertson - In his autobiography Clough noted that "Rarely could there have been a more unlikely looking professional athlete... [He was a] scruffy, unfit, uninterested waste of time...but something told me he was worth persevering with." but that "[He] became one of the finest deliverers of a football I have ever seen – in Britain or anywhere else in the world – as fine as the Brazilians or the supremely gifted Italians.

Remember very well the campaign to get him & Taylor to come to Sunderland. Often wonder which Clough we would have got if he had come, the Clough of Derby/Forest or the Clough of Leeds/Brighton !
