Been going for 50 years - this is not our lowest ebb

Agreed with most he said but i remember being excited by Reid's appointment.

Remember chatting to a
man u supporter at the time and he agreed he thought he'd do well.
Yes - but it wasnt liker mcmenemy ar oniell
BSA's system was definitely defence based and aimed at getting the ball forward quickly and hitting on the break (often with a long ball, but I wouldn't say it was hoof ball).

Despite being built around defending I actually think we played some quite exciting and entertaining football under him and it definitely got results. It wasn't negative football and we weren't frightened to attack in numbers and push up when we had the ball. One clear thing was that the defending started in the midfield as well.

If PP can implement a similar system it could work. My only concern is this sort of system probably works better when you are under pressure (like we were in the Premier League), but might not work so well when you are the dominant team (which we should be in L1)
I agree but I do know under BSA other fans weren't too excited when we were the Sky game. I loved it but as you say, we we reacting. Our problem is when we are supposed to be the stronger team.

... by a long way. It is our lowest position but does not compare to the dark old days where we had dwindling crowds (sometime < 10k), a dilapidated ground and very real financial challenges.

The football has been awful over the years although we have had the thrill of many promotion and relegation battles.

There have been rare moments in the sun. Under Peter Reid, who was an underwhelming appointment at the time, we played attacking football and had a defined style.

More recently under BSA, who many did not want, we looked like a team and there was a pattern to our play, which was centred around getting the ball out of your half, tackle hard and track back. Other fans did not want to watch us, but we loved it so just shows results matter most.

The difference now is the potential due to the infrastructure (ground etc.) and the remarkable hard-core crowd of 30k. I would name a stand after Bob Murray, for putting the infrastructure in place. We have very real potential and the new owners recognise that and want to harness it, as they have regularly stated. I have no time for those who call them con-men. You would not con a company with 50000 people around the country ready to tear your head off. They genuinely want to push us forward, be it for the challenge, the journey (they do love their football), a chance to push a football club to the top, financial reward etc. They have listened to the fans (pink seats etc.) and are genuine football people, so we should support them. We should avoid criticising at every opportunity when they are trying to get our ‘basket case’ of a club in order. Some have no idea what challenges have been faced – it’s been pretty much a complete clearout.

Many will disagree, and football fans are by nature opinionated, but we should ‘support’ our club and spreading poison and unfounded insults under the guise of free speech can only have a negative effect. No-one is completely right so if you are going to spout negativity, keep it for the pub.

Fortunately our fans are much better socially than on social media.
The same Bob Murray that wanted us to move to a ground beside Nissan and constantly failed to back managers leading to relegations.

I can't remember much about mcmuppets appointment tbh.
I was just turned 18 and far too interested in girls :D
I got the bug in the Dennis Smith era.

O'Neill was sadly not the Messiah i had hoped he'd be.

Maybe I'm wrong but does poster just appear on here when things are going bad and put a positive spin on things?
I hate people slagging off my beloved club, especially when just conjecture. The likes of Rodwell I get, but some stuff is terrible and starting to get noticed outside this forum. We have always had a good standing as fans but don't look too good online. We get an owner who communicates and gets pilliaried. Previous owner slagged off for not communicating. What a bunch of lily livered moaners we have become.

Still best fans in country.

We turned out in our thousands to greet him. It was huge news.

Great post mate.

Footballing wise and factually on the pitch which all that really matter we are at our lowest ebb.
This is correct
You can put a lovely gloss on the stadium and academy stuff but all that matters is how well you are doing on that piece of grass of 120 x 75 yards or so and if we don’t get out of this pub standard league our stadium will be less populated than the recent athletic stadium in Doha

Nicely put, Sinner, man. Here's a tune:

I get where you're coming from in terms of the infrastructure at the club. However, I strongly disagree.

Our facilities in the 80's and 90's at roker park were comparable to other teams in the top 2 leagues. There were also other factors at play during that era which affected attendances. Namely crowd trouble. Football wasnt as appealing then to families as it is now.

The future (without takeover) is as bleak as I can recall. I suspect if we remain in league 1 the academy will stop functioning at it's current status. God knows what state the first team will be in.

The crowds will also nose dive next season if we stay in this league under Parkinson. And 15k at roker park was considerably better than play at the sol in front of 22k. Our ground was depressing under the coleman/grayson season.

And as a few have pointed out Peter reid was an exciting appointment at the time.

Buxtons reign was horrendous Mcmenemy was a hopeless appointment which should've went better Crosby had a cup run but he struggled in the league butcher's was just flat as fuk...ya could go on but that was the 2nd Tier of English football and we bounced back the 1st attempt when relegated with the skeleton of a plan in place....what sets all this apart for me is ya get the feeling the current owners are winging it and now they're scratching their heads on how to get out of this league when they really shouldn't be...imo

Its social media man.

We have the best fans without doubt, but we also have our fair share of the crowd that live on social media and pretend to know everything!

I’m looking forward to games far more now than I did under Moyes. I’d rather be competitive in League One than chucking the towel in after 2 games in the Premier League.

When we had Buxton and the mags were flying was pretty low too.

Butcher & Wilko weren't a roaring success either.
