Would rather have stuck with Roy and backed him to find form in the pointlessly long series with Pakistan than bring Hales back

The correct call.
Think it's also a combination of Roy and Bairstow being the two out. Two very experienced players, if one was out and one or two of the less experienced players I don't think he'd be considered.
Roy has had chance after chance and mostly failed. He was a car crash in the hundred.
Hales deserves a go. He's a match winner on his day and he's in form.

Personally in big pressure games like World Cups, in whatever format would have Stokes ahead of most if not all England players.
As when the pressure is on and you need someone to stand up to it, not many people I would want on my side ahead of Ben Stokes.
That said certainly enough room in the side for Hales and Stokes imo.
