A stupid gamble on evil machines....

We've got a Corals next door to the club. Last year they opened another shop 200 yards down the street. Can see why now with the 4 machines max rule.

I always wondered why bookies were opening new shops despite with online gambling theres less reason to visit them. I guess thats why & must be quite profitable. Mind Ladbrookes have shut one of their shops in the town recently.

Never been a big gambler but I have decided not to bother this footy season. I am already about £40 up so far ;)

I've lost thousands

Blame myself. Not the government or bookies

Just go to grainger market in Newcastle.

From memory, clockwise from greys monument:

Coral, hills, laddy's, paddy, laddy's, laddy's (over the road), done, hills, done.

Notice they're all in most deprived part of town
Concord in Washington is a prime example of this. Hills, paddy power, Ladbroke and bet Fred all within a 100 yards of each other.

Then you don’t understand what it is. You are wrong. Simple as that. I’ve never lost a penny.

That isn't strictly true. Lots of the offers carry a small qualifying loss and they don't always come in. A chunk of offers are risk free though. Casino offers based on EV are gambling but with the odds stacked in your favour. I'm just short of £25k profit from it in less than 2 year so I'm on of the biggest advocates of it but you do need a modicum of discipline and trust in the numbers.

People drink and take drugs but not everyone is an alcoholic or smack head.

Where did I say they were?

However if you dabble in either in any way shape or form then it's not risk free is It?

If you take drugs there's always a chance you could become addicted.

I didn't say dont do it, I said it was irresponsible to suggest it was risk free.

I was agreeing that by doing it you are leaving yourself wide open to the wider implications but not everyone succumbs to addiction.
Even if a shop told someone that they had lost enough on a particular day, the customer would just go somewhere else.

If it wasn't machines it would just be something else, gambling addicts are not victims but when they're losing money they look to blame the system and not themselves.

Yes you can lose £1000 in a matter of minutes. But you could equally lose the same £1000 on a single horse race. Not sure I see much difference.
Try actually getting £1000 on a horse, you'll see the difference then ;)

Bookies are shit scared of taking decent sized bets in case the punter is more knowledgeable than them. They actively push the FOBT though because the odds are rigged in their favour and the more people spunk their cash in them, the bigger their profit margins.

You can literally sit all day throwing £500 every minute into the machine, you can't with horses, that's the difference

Matched betting is risk free. If you start gambling that’s down to you. Matched betting is not gambling.
It isn't. There may be less risk than other forms of gambling but there is still risk.
You are suggesting that it is just like a job and if you follow all of the instructions then you can't lose. Have you ever worked anywhere where people haven't made mistakes? The risk of this happening to people new to it will be considerably higher.
There are a number of external factors, internet could go down, laptop could break, kids could be having an emergency etc.
Good luck to you if you are getting rich on it but to suggest that it is risk free, especially to people who have self admitted gambling issues, is irresponsible.

How many gubbing emails have we had that say, "will we fuck take a bet from you but feel free to go crazy in our casino still."

There's a reason.

I wouldn't identify as a victim. Nor would I blame the system. I don't like the system, but it didn't cause it.

I'm an addict. A compulsive gambler. It was my failings that put me in that position. I started something and failed to stop. I took me a lot of counselling and GA meetings to realise that tho. To find the real reasons for my addiction.

When I first identified as having a problem however, I'd have blamed anyone and anything for my addiction. Including the system.

I'd say that a lot of people I've met at G A are like that too.

Good luck to anyone that likes to place a bet, or dabble in matched betting. But as someone who very much believed that certain things are risk free I can only say that anyone who has the slightest inclination that they've gone too far or think they have a problem, then please speak to someone. Pick up the phone or get on a website. Or post it on here. On the whole this place has an excellent support structure. Or even just PM Me.

I might sound like a stuck record but I honestly don't give a fuck. If my experience can stop someone else or their family going through what I've put myself and mine through then I'll bang that drum all day long.

Good post.

Discipline is the key and that's the thing Phil is missing in the debate. Not everyone is 100% disciplined. If you want to seek the thrill it's so easy to stray off course. One day the p&l isn't enough so you drop one side of the bet and you're on the slippery slope. One error and you try and cover your losses on an outright bet. Slippery slope...

I've seen it in trading. Very easy for one moment of madness to trigger and irreversible sequence of events. Nick Leeson being a great example.

What a cracking post, thanks for taking the time to put that down. Candidate for post of the year in my eyes for truth and relevance
Don't know if you have seen Broken with sean bean (be on BBC I player I expect ) and I won't put spoilers in but it deals graphically with this issue and others
Basically corporate is farming the populous with government sanction. We are just economic units of money transfer, no longer existing for our own sake in their eyes. A nation needs to watch out when it is willing to leave large numbers desperate

I personally enjoy playing on them
Here's how to save up some money.

Spin a coin and bet on how many heads or tails will come in a row. You can do it from just one to as many as you like.

Every time you win pay yourself the odds that the spins indicate less 3%

One spin - return twice the amount £1 returns £1.94
two spins return four times £1 returns £3.88 etc

Then put all the money you have left put in a jar and at the end of the year you will have a tidy sum.

Not as much fun as going all in and getting 21 though
