6music

I've heard Huey turn off Black Country New Road after about 15 seconds once. Said it was too early on a Saturday for all that screaming and shouting racket. Not sure I've known anyone on 6 axe a track like that on air, so brutal
He's playing newcastle again in October, I may have to go, great live turn

Genuine question - why do people still listen to the radio to find new music?

I understand sticking a radio station on if you wanna hear a bit crack but isn't it easier to find new music in other ways?

whats the set up with 'the playlist' ? you hear the same songs over and over for a week then they disappear, its not like each dj has been out researching and listening to loads of un-heard-of bands and brings their songs to the radio for a spin. there must be some sort of commercial/marketting/record label deal type set up behind the scenes somewhere

i imagine it to be a very exclusive club at the station. like if your not 'in' , then no one would want to know you

Producers meet on a Tuesday each week, taking in their respective DJs favourite songs of the last few weeks for consideration. They all listen to it and discuss, then the music team decide what moves up from C to B to A List and what is due to come off (usually tracks get 4-5 weeks airplay) altogether and what to add that's new. The adds are generally songs which have had a significant number of "spot plays" (one off spins, not part of playlist rotation) on a specific DJs show. Tracks that get Keaveny's "Liked And Shared" or Lamacq's "Livener" tend to stand a good chance of being added as that's 5x spot plays across a week and already a healthy case. Pluggers also write into the producers of each show providing stats and info (number of spot plays, how the single is streaming, who's written about the artist this week in the press, has the artist received support previously, who are they supporting on tour yadda yadda yadda) ahead of the Tuesday meeting in order to boost the chances of a positive discussion.

To be fair to the DJs, a huge amount of research goes in on their end. Passionate bunch are 6 Music presenters, they do listen to new music, particularly previously unheard stuff that they plant a flag for and champion in the long run. If anything, they're mostly distrustful of the record label machine

I get shedloads of new music sent to me every hour, I sit and listen to playlists each day too. But there's something about a good talk up from a passionate narrator on the radio that makes me want to know more about an artist, grabs my attention much more than when the song simply skips wordlessly to the next artist on Spotify.

Absolutely is. I use the music thread on here for that. But if you’re in tune with 6music presenters it does make the job easier I think. I trust a lot of them on new up and coming music and although people moan about it their ‘regular list’ is good.

I mean I have minor complaints about 6music but you really couldn’t ask for a better radio station. I’d argue most of the weekly presenters are good and the weekends very hit and miss. Big fan.

how? my only way of hearing new music is either recommended by mates (who i never see anymore to get into those conversations), on here, or 6music

my only worry is that by the time they get onto 6music, i hear there tune, remember to check their album out, like it, look up their tour dates, they've already toured the small venues and are too big to be considered cool anymore. always behind the times me

Aye, The Playlist should have been scrapped years ago. If people want to listen to the same few songs over & over, listen to tinpot local radio or advert radio. Most of the presenters hate it & sometimes take the piss.

Agreed, my preferred way of hearing new (to me) music is via radio.

What do you do Bukowski? (radiowise)

I prefer the weekend "specialist shows" and the 7pm to midnight shows, TDJFKAL (Riley), The Guvnor (Gid Coe) & Lord Iggy of Pop.

If Mark & Lard were ever re-united it would be radio heaven (again). Who else would get away with repeating a thinly disguised "c*%t" on daytime (& anytime) radio?

aye i only really listen during the day when i'm driving around.

I know it’s only a couple of hours a week but I would recommend... Beat Surrender (Radio Newcastle) & Stereo Underground (Radio Solent) Always some cracking tunes on and a bit more alternative than the mainstream stuff.

Beat Surrender has a playlist of about 100 tracks... the come round with monotonous regularity.

Will try the Radio Solent show though, thanks for that.

All of them?

Missed that - Ive sent in the odd e-mail to RadMac and Keavney and got the odd shout out.

theres always people from Sunlun getting mentioned - it used to be a proper Manc NW fest - but Lauren makes sure listeners and our local bands get mentioned as much as possible
Blandford Street got a mention this morning.
Huey mentions 10 times a week " now for something off the playlist" ie nowt to do with me
He makes his position very clear.

Oh, I could ask... but I won't get.

For me too much on R6 is painfully hip. Sometimes the best thing about it is the absence of commercials, which is faint praise but is the best I can do.

Only listen to it in the car.

Steve Lamacq is unbearable.

Marc Riley, Huey Morgan, R & M and Craig Charles are probably the best.

It’s not exactly taxing to stick the radio on whilst you’re in the car or whatever. It’s just another way of coming across something you might not have heard before.

I like Shaun Keaveny but I think Rad Mac are criminally underused (especially Rad). If I'm not up till about 9 on a weekend I put the show on from the start on the sounds app as it beats having to listen to Cerys Matthews playing sea shanties and Cuban Folk.

Ahh Cerys Matthews and her Welsh language love in . That show is all over the place musically....very hard to listen to.

The Huey show is fantastic, really like Lauren Laverne and Shaun Keaveney too. Mary Anne Hobbs plays some absolute tosh at times but the Friday mixes at 12 on a Friday are top draw. The Mike Skinner one a few years back was fantastic. Her voice really grates on me to. Sounds like professor Brian Cox. Really like Radcliffe and Marconi too. Great station.
