1989/90??? Not the play offs though.
Was in the Pilot Cutter after the match and a Transit Van pulled up outside and about a dozn lads came charging out with baseball bats. Only one got inside before the doors were shut behind him, his bat removed and a lesson taught. Unfortunately the ones outside set about a disabled lad walking past in his Sunderland Top. It was all over in an instant and half the pub went towards the doors to get at them and half went the other way. I think my pint was the only one left standing.
Bob tried to shut the pub straight away afterwards as the barmaids were all terrified but he was persuaded to stay open.

I was in a pub near the ground when we played Exeter away on a Tuesday night. I was pleased to see so many Sunderland down for a league cup match and there were about 40 of us drinking in there.
A really big middle aged Exeter fan came in looking like two prop forwards with one head. He breezed in and politely asked, "Which one of you northern boys would like to come outside?"
We all just looked at each other and laughed, eventually he walked out again. A while later another one came in and asked us if we wanted to walk down the street where there was a gang of Exeter waiting. Again we just ignored him and carried on drinking.
That was all that happened and when we finished our drinks we were expecting to walk outside to a reception but there was nowt. There was nowt on the walk to the ground and we saw no trouble in the ground.
The only trouble we heard about was Gatesy acting the twat as usual.

How old are you if u don't mind me asking? Only when I started joint as a kid in the 80s I used to see bother every other week at roker inside and outside the ground.

Worst ive seen away is Boro. The one Iceman has mentioned and also the defeat (iirc) midweek in the cup where it all kicked off in the car park.
Was a canny battle in the streets down Leicester (2nd leg of semi final) as well as near the Wheatsheaf for the first leg.
Stoke away in the 90s on the grass bank looked mental although I was canny far away from it all and also loads of bother down Barnsley when we won 1 nil (Russell scored and Stewart got sent off). Canny few Sunderland in the home end that day.

a few lads got nicked on the sunday. the undercover dutch polis came to the boozer we were all in, giving it the 'come on'. when it kicked off, the polis came round the corner, along with 2 from northumbria, and hearded everyone up. coonts. any lads they couldnt fit in the van were locked in the pub and all names and addresses took by the english plod and video'd. think they got some bans out of it - set up again!

From what I have read in various books Boro seemed proper organised, going down the place like Cardiff in big numbers and taking them on.
Andy Nicholl from Everton said they turned them over down they place once and in the return game they got off the coached and 400 boro swarmed all over then
I rememeber the Boro home game in 2000 ? when Gray got the winner - me and 2 pals were just walking round towards the prem concourse when the police herded 70-100 lads to the away turnstiles. I'm not kidding, they were all evil looking gets, baldy heads, bull necks and looked like they'd given the steroids a real hammering. Turns out it was the Frontline who had been kept in the Pilgrim for 2 hours after turning up at Sunderland station early. Even tho' just a hundred of them, they would have taken some stopping.
Surprised no one has mentioned Boro away, League Cup 2nd leg 1987 - one of the hairiest walks from the station to a ground of all time. Norma Jean got smashed in retaliation for the Wheatsheaf, and the sidestreets from the NJ bar to AP were a nightmare - Boro lads coming from everywhere at 500 of us.
I only walked down to the ground with them as the coppers were going to charge for the bus that they put on to take us down to AP !!

I've had trouble every time I've been to Boro, around 7/8 times, and would always choose Newcastle, over Boro, to walk through with my colours on ........ there's something desperately evil about some of those Boro bastards.

I got caught up in that one if its the game I am thinking of....coach from Boldon/Witherwack went through early and polis pulled us up enroute to Newcastle under Lyme for a gentlemans stop off...took straight to the ground which as most know is a shyte hole miles from anywhere, spirits were dampened and a few watery ales consumed in the ground. After the game all was quiet then Stoke broke though some fencing I think and heaps of them charged down the grass banks (think coach park was in a recessed bowl type thing) and a fair ruck ensued until calm was restored.

My son and I were sat in the back row of Luton's mainstand. Some Luton thugs came along the walkway and confronted some Sunderland lads in front of us. It kicked off and one of the Luton pricks trying to get at the Sunderland whacked his knee into my sons back sending him flying and in tears. He was 8 yo at the time. Thankfully the stewards moved us amongst some civilised Luton fans. Don't even dare to claim innocent people don't get caught up with your fuckwittery. He was f***ing petrified.
