I loved it at Roker before the teams came out and the buzz of the crowd became a roar.

Now they drown it all out with music until kick off, the bastards. This annoys me intensely and is honestly one of the reasons I don't go as much as I used to.

Half of the point of going to a football match is to experience the atmosphere. If this is drowned out, so is half the reason for going.

Couldn't agree more. The teams came out separately, a roar for us and boos for the visitors. That was fair enough I always thought, it was the same for us away from home.

Now they come out together and do all this shaking hands shite. Totally kills the atmosphere.

Modern day fans have no idea what a great atmosphere there used to be. It has never been emulated at the SOL, not even in the derbies or the legendary Sheffield United game.

Ah cars driving around the perimeter, RAF display dogs, the peanut man, f***ing awful piss troughs, sharpened coins, Millwall bricks

I qualify for this thread on both the age AND the weight criteria (easily!)....

A couple of memories....

One of my first games at Roker around 67 or 68 saw us playing West Ham. A Geoff Hurst thunderbolt of a shot hit Charlie smack in the face. The trainer ran on wiped his face with the magic sponge, and he played on - 'the soft gets' nowadays would be carted off and knackered for 6 months.

Also the Millwall game 1974, first game of the season - won 4-1, but hell on before during and after match. Also in London that day were Man U, playing their first game in the Second Division. Hell on in Kings Cross area with Man U and Cockneys.

We'd been dropped off by Tennicks at Kings Cross at about 7am, and about 20 of us spent part of the morning in some open air swimming pool in Central London, where we borrowed some cossies. A few years later saw the film 'Catch us if you can' starring the Dave Clark 5 (I know I know....) in which the said swimming pool was seen.

You couldn't make it up........:)

Anyone else here remember that?

It used to be great rushing out of the New Derby when the away fans were being escorted past. It was man to man marking by the police and them lot would be quiet as owt
T'was even better when everyone also rushed out of Whelans chippy to have a looksee, leaving me at the front end of the queue to get my matchday Cowboy snack, instead of being outside the door in the usual lengthy queue ;) :-D

Was it just me saw it? After our last win against the mags at Roker, road behind the clockstand, bunch of sunlun lads running at the mag fans with a f***ing tree?............LOL :-D:-D

The legendary Millwall Brick. Havent heard of that one for a while.

For the uninitiated it was rolled up newspaper, rolled so tight and IIRC dipped in water to stiffen it that if hit with it you were in severe trouble. Nee one is going to arrest you with a newspaper in your possession....

Arh Yes, the Friday night travel to London games. First stop for breakfast then into the all day pubs at the meat markets, sawdust on the floor

I didnt go, but some of my older mates did. Legendary game that Tommy Lynn has just recounted in the latest edition of ALS.

1985 League cup run - Gayle scoring against Nottingham Forest (?) at the Roker End.

A great moment that was. I used to like Howard Gayle, even though he was basically shite.

"Gayle Warning For Spurs" ran one headline the next day.

Ashurst worked wonders getting those misfits to a Wembley final.

Aye we used to go to the Mecca on the Friday night and make our way down to Dundas Street - last pint in the Grapes (IIRC) and fish and chips from that chippy next soor - some fine states on the coach......

f***ing hell man! Dundas Steet and the John Tennick's Hogwart's Special. Who was the old fella with the mouthie on Tennick's bus? Giving it Robert Zimmerman licks at half past two in the bastard morning!
The Mecca first then on to Dundas Steet. Happy days.

the whole run was bizarre. Started at C Palace IIRC and then just seemed to gather momentum. Remember the Spurs game well. SAFC kicked to shit after the game. Lad off the SAFCSA bus taken to hospital - hit with a bottle IIRC.

Legendary game indeed. I had nightmares about it for weeks after!! Was being chased around by 40 year old dockers for much of the first half - somehow managed to get away and into the seats.

Also away to Southampton in 85. Len Ashurst took all of the names of people who travelled as it was a midweek game and said that if we got to the final we would get tickets. True to his word
