Tommy Watson ( ...off to Brighton)

Yes but that’s because to you and I that is a pipe dream that would radically improve our lives (no offence but assuming you like me don’t earn more than 250k a year). Once you get there and are looking to build a career a 5 year contract on a couple of million a year will set you up for life regardless if you don’t even make the grade as a player
The thing is I get it, these kids a lot of the time are just like an asset to the clubs. However, we are at a very important cross roads I think with this batch of impressive young kids. We really need to look after them. Keep them together for as long as possible

Does my head in, flogging our best young player for f***ing £8m. What an absolute joke.

And what a surprise we’ve spent fuck all yet again.
Gannen on like a minge then realising the next day you overreacted again.......just like a matchday thread

Best young player???

Did you forget about Bellingham and Rigg???

I just don’t understand this ‘no brainer’ narrative. He has a huge amount of potential. He’s likely to be worth significantly more than that in the future, and I can see him surpassing Mundle very quickly.

Sounds like out hand has been forced, and if so then I guess it is what it is and the clubs have done well to get some money for him. But looking at the fees paid for other young players (who had admittedly played a handful more games) then I don’t think £12m is a cracking bit of business. I think it’s the absolute bare minimum we should accept.

What other deals have been higher fees for a similar scenario?

5 league appearances and 18 months left in their contract?

12m is a great deal when you consider the facts and not the hope and guesswork he will fulfil his potential

What makes you think he wants to stay?

You need to look after yourself because nobody else will. Business, football and life are ruthless.
Yes but this is why I’m happy that I come from a more socialist area. Sometimes you need to stick together to get things done. Ruthless can be and is very dangerous

Potential is never guaranteed though. You're right, and he likely will be worth more than that in the future but its about balancing the risk of him not improving significantly, the risk of injury or accepting the fact he might just want to leave.

He's injured with no comeback date, so obviously not yet match fit, he's behind Mundle in the pecking order, will get limited game time, and we have no idea whether he'll produce when he does get back on the pitch. All in all, an 8 figure transfer fee and a potential replacement with PL experience on loan sounds like an absolutely cracking deal to me.
Didn’t say it wasn’t!

I'll be a bit gutted if he goes. It would have been great to see a young homegrown talent come into the team and develop and make an impact for a season or two. To me it looks like he could easily surpass Mundle and Clarke. Brighton will probably loan him out somewhere in the summer as well, which will be frustrating.
I'd love to know how much Harte has to do with it and much he thinks about £ compared to a footballing career.......

*I do however understand that if he doesn't want to sign a new contract we need to cash in if the price is right.

Watson is dating Harte's daughter, maybe he's been told she's not allowed to go to the Metro Centre with Tommy until he leaves.
