Tommy Watson ( ...off to Brighton)

But he isnt guaranteed to get regular game time and the club wont allow his contract to run down and lose him for not a lot in 18 months time.
I think he would get plenty of game time now, once he is fit again. But i agree, club had to protect value as much as anything

He’s not even close. He’s played a handful of games and not always even made an impact.

People going way over the top at this stage.
He has had one excellent game, and a bit of a mixed bag in the others. He certainly isnt better than Martin Smith or Kieran Brady were at that age, and neither exactly had fantastic careers, although Brady’s was more due to injury.

A £12M deal is a cracking bit of business for our 2nd choice winger

Don’t talk sense on here. Some people can’t grasp that for some people money and a step up to the premier league are preferable to learning your trade at a local club. That’s his decision and we’ve got an incredible deal for someone who has played less than 10 games
Just got in. Has a deal been done? Nothing on SAFC.com.

Ultimately he will do what he thinks best (based on numerous discussions with the club and his family and advisors)

I can see the advantages and disadvantages in staying or leaving for the lad.

It’s a tough decision for all involved.

I’d be happy if he stayed as I think he has bags of potential but also would be happy if he goes, we get the right deal AND we invest it well back into the team

I just don’t understand this ‘no brainer’ narrative. He has a huge amount of potential. He’s likely to be worth significantly more than that in the future, and I can see him surpassing Mundle very quickly.

Sounds like out hand has been forced, and if so then I guess it is what it is and the clubs have done well to get some money for him. But looking at the fees paid for other young players (who had admittedly played a handful more games) then I don’t think £12m is a cracking bit of business. I think it’s the absolute bare minimum we should accept.

Why ? Shunning good money just because you don’t like that a player has chosen to leave. It’s a great deal and handled well by the club imo. We aren’t going to be messed about by an 18 year old kid from Horden who played 5 games ffs

Me too but at the same time it’s all about what we do with the funds now.

Yeah its one of them decisions that 90% of the time will backfire.

Just thinking if i was in charge of the club, and im trying to build an eventual PL squad, id be pretty pissed off if every other year i had a 'teenager' with 20 games under their belt forcing the clubs hand. Makes it difficult to 'finish' the squad and say "ok were going for it this season".

At some point you may want to make an example of someone, id imagine if we let Watson rot for the next 18 months and scuppered his move, it may put the next one off pulling this stunt.

Only being half serious anyway, truth is id take the money and run.
