The Fishing Thread

Tight lines Mate.
I had another run just when the Sun was going behind the trees, dropped the bait.

Hope it goes well 👍🎣
Been making a few rigs today and we have a stack of fresh and frozen bait.

Rag, Lug, and mussel all fresh. And then frozen blacks, Cart, runny down and squid.

Let’s hope we get into something.
Lush that mate. I’ve never fished for Pike as of yet but bairn wants to go so maybe one day.

Where ya off to Jeff? What you fishing for? I might get the sea fishing gear out soon. Not been for last two year.
We are fishing a clean beach after whiting, codling, flatties or what ever might be around.

18lb Pike earlier.
Definitely some bigger ones in there.
Fishing is good for the heart and soul 🎣
Stunning fish mate, well done.

I’m a bit taken aback that you’ve ditched your crocs
I fished in them, but I didn't wear them that day as I went into a few "Posh" shops with 'Er indoors.I ain't given up on me crocs as long as they don't give up on me.
I even used them for a spot of spelunking last week.

Those crocs are EPIC but tomorrow given the temperature and tides I will be wearing my Vass chesties.

I’m expecting to be cold. I don’t care if we get into some decent fish.

Find a place where there are Pike the best advice of the lot.
Smaller “Jack” Pike are great fun and a simple wire trace attached to a lure a good start.
Frosty weather, clearer water and you are ready mate 🎣

Always enjoy making up rigs.
Hoping you catch Mate 🤞🎣

Appreciated.
Definitely some bigger ones in there for sure and just a case of finding them.
That was much needed as needed a confidence booster for sure.
We all need to catch fish, no different to a Striker scoring goals 🤣🎣⚽

The Wildlife, particularly the birds incredible. Watched a lovely Kingfisher working a feeder stream and just about to start packing up watched a Barn Owl fly overhead.

and awaaaaay 🤣

Used to knock up 20 rigs to fish a match at marsden, £30 worth of gear including sinker and leader knowing I will lose everyone of them. The only one I’d get back is if there was a fish on. £20 worth of bait.

1st prize £50.

Never quite understood why the idea of sitting at the edge of a lake appeals to blokes, it's like an admission that the rest of your life is worse than sitting on an uncomfortable portable stool, watching a fishing line for hours on end.

That's fairly obvious.
Peace, tranquility (and birds trifle), look at how many people it appeles to.
Very relaxing also see above post.

Aye it is, good angler.
May I ask, what makes a good angler? (serious question too)

Expensive game Mate.
These Carp Anglers on the Reservoir I fish. The gear they take is incredible.
So many now have the electric assisted 4 wheel trolleys, piled high with gear and then the bait.
Like a row of tanks coming along the bank.

Few years time they will be using drones to drop bait in their swim 🤣🤣

Not for everyone and we are all wired up differently.
Taking football as an example it’s far more for me than just those 90 minutes.
Fishing is the same and almost impossible to explain to those that don’t get it. Definitely the hunting instinct remains in some however the connection with nature and the wildlife around you does wonders for your mental health.
Every hour spent fishing adds 10 minutes to your lifespan. Fact.

Losing a decent fish you lose the sum of those 10 mins gained. 🤣🤣
Happens to us all.

I do think the Whitehouse and Mortimer series has at least given some understanding as to why people fish.
I’ve had a fair few messages from non fisherman friends enjoying the programme and can now see the appeal.

Now that is a tough one. I would say consistency on catching would be a good measure.
To be honest best to avoid the question as once you start putting pressure on yourself the enjoyment could well disappear.
Some people spend thousands on gear and some just can’t spend that amount.

Best not to compare to others and just do it for yourself.

The daftest yet factual piece of all is that it’s all about a fish wanting to eat.
You stick a great big pin on a piece of string and attach a piece of chicken on the end and you won’t catch.

A small hook, light line, a maggot and you will.
Go from there. If you ever take kids fishing for the first time try and get them to catch. Just go from there.

OK, but if they are labelled with ` a good fisherman` they must be doing something different if they are catching, if that makes them good. I guess the fact they are labelled as good mean they catch constantly.

Yep I used to match fish for carp too. At a match with 60 lads I’d estimate £250k worth of gear. Easily around the ponds.

Pubs, Restaurants, the match, gigs. Something with a bit of life.
Each to their on mate.

There's more to life than being in the company of other human beings.

As far as Sea Angling goes (as that's all I do), they take time to learn about how different tides effect different marks. Does that mark fish better on the flood or the ebb, over high or low water. And then on what size tide. And then there's bait. You can have the most expensive gear in the world, but if your bait is crap, or it's the wrong bait, you'll not catch half as much.

That's just a small sample of knowledge, you could literally write a book. Personally, I learnt bucket loads fishing the opens in Northumberland and SW Scotland in my late teens/early 20's, watching good anglers.
