The Fishing Thread

Spent a week in SW Scotland Bass fishing a month ago, as I've been doing for the last 15 years. First time I've blanked there, absolutely terrible.

Talking to the locals, seems the temperature in the bay is lower than it should be as their summer has been terrible. It was notable that I never seen one gannet in Luce bay diving for mackerel. Seen a few Mullet, but that was it.

Over on the NE coast, lost a good fish at my feet, looked around 5lb, took my patchinko in about a foot of water 3 yards away from me.

I'm going over to fish the MOG Bass Festival next weekend, so fingers crossed for that.

Sounds magical Mate.

My Grand Dad got me into it. Made me a glass minnow trap then I had a small 7ft rod and caught bleak then progressed onto Gudgeon and Ruffe.

Remember the day that it “hooked” me.
Fishing a small worm on a Float. They used to pump the water from Didcot power station into the Thames, it was warm and there was a concrete outlet and it was a fishing hot spot.
Caught 2 Perch and 2 small Bream.
At the time I used to read Mr Crabtree an illustrated fishing book and couldn’t put it down.
The power station is now decommissioned however the outlet is still there without the water being pumped into it.
I often stand on it looking down the river with my mind locked on happy childhood memories.
Great that your lad is into it. Unfortunately both mine have had a go but not taken it further. Pity you were not closer as would take you and your lad out.🎣
Used to have Mr Crabtree Goes Fishing, loved that book as a kid

I've heard of a couple of decent bass (5lb +) being lost in the surf in the past week. One in Druridge bay, the other further north.
So there are some good size fish around.
Good luck at the MOG, their recent multi species challenge was quite successful.

Think big, be positive, went into a store for some hooks yesterday, they have a stock of salmon landing nets.

Hope that comes into use Mate.

Only knows if we hook a Barbel next week what we are going to do.
Both my Mate and myself have identical bad left shoulders 🤣
You just couldn’t make it up. Both will have to come to each others swim and use the landing net. 🎣

We’ve had a really poor summer sea fishing. With all the piers closed we have been mostly fishing clean beaches and have been no threat to fish stocks.

Might go fly fishing soon. At least on stocked waters you know there is something in there.

You from down that way?

I’ve been down that way quite a bit during the summer for the hounds.

They don’t half go on the light gear but sharp gets boring when you can’t bait up quick enough 😂😂
Aye mate..moved 20 year ago.
Silver dogfish lol. Tbf good sport on light gear like you say.

Which beaches do you normally fish down here?

Fished Hilston, Easington and dimlington mainly this year

Dimlington had changed loads like it’s washed right out now

Out newton and east newton but the get down at out newton put me off it was brutal because the usual one had disappeared 😂😂

Two days on the River Wye.
An absolutely stunning River and not easy to fish with plenty of snags and locating the fish the challenge.
The wildlife spectacular and the first day never been so close to a chinook helicopter no doubt the SAS were on a training exercise.

Day one - 9 Chub all around the 4lb all falling to luncheon meat.
Day two - 2 Club and at last a late afternoon Barbel of 7lb all on pellet. Lost one which was disappointing.

Just gives you that much needed lift. Will definitely look to go again.

Probably the best beach down there to be honest but it’s also the most popular due to how easy it is to access

Fish Hilston and you’re usually the only person there due to the fact it’s 25 minute walk before you get down 😂😂
Fished there loads too. Nightmare them cliffs!!! The problem was with us travelling down we always missed the fish.
Someone would catch a load of fish by the time we heard about it and got down there it was 2/3 days after. Gone!!! I also meant smoothies not spurs.

Aye you’ve got to be quick like.

It’s a lot easier to judge now like cause there’s webcams at withernsea so you can check the colour etc. nightmare getting all the way down there and the waters like gin. Might aswell turn round and go straight home

Best time I’ve found is a day after it flattens off. I love it down there like but it’s a hell of a drive for a few fish 😂
