Bilbao Black Cats / Athletic Club Bilbao

Class.

If you park at the uni I was parked next to you on Saturday - Athletic Club centenary top on? I was dying to say what a class shirt it was but you were just sitting in the car!

Must have been someone else mate. I parked in Roker.

Mark was wearing an Athletic shirt but he came on the metro.

good piece on a Englishmans visit to Bilbao / San Mames

Thanks for sharing this.

We've been told the version of events we have for the origin of Athletic's red and white shirts will be published in a local newspaper either this Sunday or Monday.

That should get the ball rolling and stir interest among others.

Curious fact is that the only reference Athletic have to Southampton regarding the red and white shirts is on their website which was put on years ago. In their museum, they make no mention of Southampton and the red and white shirts. Instead they say they changed because of English influence.

On top of that, in their St George's day nod to English football in a tweet, they mentioned that they wore shirts based on Blackburn Rovers until 1910 but then completely ignore the change to red and white and why 🤔

So, we think they know they're unsure and are waiting for our version.

I've been in the museum at the Mames and there's an article from the Sunderland echo about a match between English Sailors in the early 1900s, Obviously, the Sailors (maybe shipyard workers) were from Sunderland.

Some videos with photos and meaningful music to sum up the 11 days the Bilbao Black Cats spent in Sunderland and County Durham.

Did Michut nearly smile there or have I had one too many?

June 1889. The first football match played in Bilbao between English sailors and miners.

Sailors were from 5 ships. Barmston, Dawdon, Nina, Abydos and the last one the name escapes me. The Nina, Barmston and Dawdon were built and registered in Sunderland, County Durham.

There's also reference to a sports shop opened in 1900. Henry R Murton which had shops in Fawcett Street Sunderland and Grainger Street Newcastle.

All this plus much more is part of our version of events of how Athletic got the red and white shirts and why we believe they were sent from Sunderland and not Southampton

Slight smile. He's a nice lad.

Fresh on the shelves in the Basque country this morning

You should be able to get a basic translation in English via Google chrome.

An English version will be coming soon

I’ve just bought an excellent new book: “Los Leones the unique story of Athletic Bilbao” for anyone interested.

Goes into great detail of the history of the club, the politics and culture surrounding it. Would really recommend it for anyone looking for a good footy book.

It's canny. The 1st English version book about Athletic. There may be some inaccuracies in it. I was interviewed for it being part of the Bilbao Black Cats along with Borja Valle Sarasketa for the research done on the origin of the red and white kits.

Our research refutes the Southampton claim which was official since 2010 (up until then it was Sunderland). As a result, the club no longer considers the Southampton story as legitimate and therefore they don't reference it in the museum or social media accounts. It's on the website which is badly in need of updating according to the museum director who we met with in March this year.

Really pleased to see all your hard work is paying off with some recognition mate.

I’ve been fascinated with Athletic since I was a kid. We spent a lot of time in Spain growing up and my old man used to tell me the Sunderland ship yard worker match was the origin of their red and white stripes… not sure how he knew that!

I’ve always admired the Basque only philosophy and am astonished how they make it work so successfully. It’s refreshingly counter cultural given the globalised nature of the modern game.

I finally got to visit the San Mames whilst backpacking around the region in 2010 and had a look around the museum for a reference to Sunderland without any luck… did manage to get myself a home shirt though.

It would be great to build more of a relationship between the clubs given the shared heritage. Next time I’m in Bilbao will give you a shout… but might bump into you in San Pedro in a couple of weeks.
