4th test Manchester

What you don’t seem to be grasping, is conditions and the wicket are without a doubt a factor in selection of bowlers for a particular match.

That was tried, tested and failed at Lords. Our best bowler in damp, overcast conditions was Tongue so again Jimmy is not being picked on form or for the conditions
With Bairstow out of form, Ali batting out of position, Root now Cummins bunny, an opener who is good for 40 can England afford to pick Anderson or should they be looking at someone who can contribute 20 or so with the bat lower down

That was an oversight. Indeed 1 x 5 for in the last year, hardly a ringing endorsement if you cant bat and have other bowlers doing the same role

I am looking at what he has done in this series against a side he struggles against. A career average home and away of 35

Top level sport is a brutal place at times and Jimmy should not be playing this week based on his form
It was bollocks.

So your subset is two games then? That's the only consideration?

Not withstanding his career average of 35 against Australia and this series is placing a lot of emphasis on runs from the lower order

Bairstow was our best player last year and should now be dropped in the eyes of many if not all

The Aussies have gone with no frontline spinner.

David Warner
Usman Khawaja
Marnus Labuschagne
Steve Smith (vc)
Travis Head
Mitchell Marsh
Cameron Green
Alex Carey
Mitchell Starc
Pat Cummins (c)
Josh Hazlewood
Cummins in at 10  5 seam options, weather could be a huge factor in this match.

That's a tough 6/7 to get through like

I think that's by far the best option in their position
Forecast how it is, I think it's sensible from them.

4th best bowler in the world you say?

Depends how much dependence you place on rankings ie, Starc is an inferior bowler to Robinson by all accounts

I was trying to figure out who the best batting side in the world were who we played last year as the Aussies have 4 in the top 10

If you look back at over the last 10 years or so any English bowler to get the Aussies rattled (bar Swann) were genuine quicks ala Flintoff, Simon Jones, Wood and Tongue. The aussies dont like it up em for want of a better expression

Pretty much the best team they can pick under the circumstances, that other spinner looked very average.

Rather amazingly Jimmy has only played one test against Australia at Old Trafford.....2 for 150 odd across two innings. In the crucial first innings, Australia racked up 500 odd with Jimmy wicketless

No pedigree against Australia
No pedigree against Australia at Old Trafford
No batting capability in a series where lower order runs are winning tests
No recent form
No recent form in favourable conditions ala Lords

So you can't really judge Anderson from one match as it's one match . Need a few at least to judge don't you ? What's his record like at OT in internationals? Bring me back the stats for that.

A tadge unfair to judge him on one game against Australia but his career average of 35 against Australia renders his record against other nations irrelevant. Many of England's best players have fallen short when it comes to Australia where only the best survived and prospered ala Cook, Flintoff, Wood

Other than he is playing at home, there is rain around and he he has been a good servant for England are the reasons being offered for his selection. If you were Tongue what would you be thinking?

I'd be disappointed probably. only 25 though so his time will come. I would have went tongue over Anderson personally but can see why England have went Anderson..don't think it's weakened our bowling attack. Whichever way you look at it, it's improved by leaving Robinson out.

We’re still travelling down on Saturday, might as well get out and see the cricket ground and that, hotel is paid for as well.

Disappointing but that’s the great British summer for you.
