What was your expectations when McMenemy first took charge?

I remember seing Sammy the Chin welcome him on his arrival on Look Newcastle.
I was impressed, but not for long. Honestly Alan Kennedy was one of the worst players we have ever played. Terrible, completely finished.
Mackem enemy left us in the middle of the night, sneaked back to the South Cosst like the rat that he was.

That’s exactly right. It was the lass in the office that Jacko was chatting up. He was trying to get her to go on a date and she said something like she was waiting for a call from Lawrie McMenemy to play on Saturday.

In fairness she could have done better than Seamus.
She could and was quite pretty from what I can remember.

I’m sure Seamus had an issue with the size of the goals too.

It wasn't though. We were shite but still not in a relegation place.
I understand why people don't apportion any blame to Stokoe the mags do the same in not blaming Shearer or Benitez for their last 2 relegations.
The alarm bells were ringing long before the Sheff United home defeat. Then McMenemey was sacked.

The loss, despite an improved performance at Bradford, in Stokoe’s first game put us 21st.

Hardly Stokoe’s fault he had to work with the likes of Hetzke and Hesford

After a howler he said the crossbar at Grimsby was too high 😂😂

Ten games to avoid relegation, PDC and DA managed it with fewer games. Stokoe has to take some of the blame, although I understand why many don't want to.

We went from great expectations to gloom! 😀

In the latter part of his second season I was in the main stand paddock near the Roker End when Eric Gates came running past, beat two defenders and zipped a lovely low cross into the penalty area. Not a red and white shirt anywhere near it. The penalty area that is.
I shouted in frustration 'There's nebody there man Eric'. He must have heard me because he turned straight round and looked at me and shrugged his shoulders as if to say 'Well what more can I do?'. He was right. He'd done everything he could and played a striker's dream of a cross into the danger area but nobody else could be arsed to attack. Just about sums up McMenemy's team, a bunch of misfits.

Sounds like a David Moyes team

Spoke to him in Sardina at Italia 90 he was working for the BBC
Absolute no regrets about his time at Sunderland, reckened he just needed a couple of more players and another season, said we wouldn't have gone down if he'd stayed in charge.
To say he came over as arrogant was something of an understatement

Ooh look at me aren't i controversial

McMenemy had invested a fortune in that squad relative to where we were and in 20 months they just got worse and worse to the extent that after the Sheffield United game there was 8000 or so there and fans were so enraged they were chanting for him to be sacked, attacked his car and that team and the mood around the place ensured we were only going one way. The players had given up which couldnt be said fir the pwerformances afterwards. Results didn't improve, performances did I think but there's only one person to blame for our relegation and that was lawrie McMenemy. According to Lawrie McMenemy as well.

I've called mags out who excuse shearer and the fat Spanish waiter for the same thing.
It's not controversial.😂

The damage was done. Despite his '73 heroics, not even Stokoe could have produced a miracle of that size.

It worked at Southampton because he brought in Keegan, Shilton and Ball, top class players who actually wanted to be there. The players he bought up here (Burley, Swindlehurst, Kennedy) was did they really want to be here? Let's remember that Mac was the highest paid manager in the country when he was here. Man Utd offered him the job before Big Ron got it. They must have be laughing there arses off.
fell out with keegan over a daft comment keegan said ok well i am off big regret from mac

I really thought we were going to be well established in the top 6 of the First Division.

Never in my worst nightmare Did I imagine what a complete charlatan he was. Even worse than Moyes.
